Yvon Douis, member of the France squad at the 1958 World Cup that finished third, has died aged 85 of COVID-19.

He was capped 20 times for Les Bleus, scoring four times between 1957 and 1965.

In his club career, a prolific goalscorer scored 62 goals in 172 appearances for Lille between 1953 and 1959.

He moved to Le Havre where he registered 28 goals in 71 games in two seasons before moving on once more to Monaco.

In the principality, he would score 62 times once again in 167 games between 1961 and 1967.

His final club was AS Cannes, where played between 1967 and 1969 and scored 26 goals in 81 appearances.

Douis' death means that only six of the France squad from that World Cup are still alive.

Goalkeepers Dominique Colonna and Francois Remetter, defender Robert Mouynet, midfielder Bernard Chiarelli and strikers Maryan Wisniewski and the legendary Just Fontaine.

Could go in the COVID thread but more appropriate here: Mehrdad Minavand, who played for Iran in 1998 dead of Covid aged only 45.

Another one dead of COVID: Ali Ansarian, aged just 43. I read he was in hospital when Mehrdad died, but thought he would recover as their over-80 coach. Turns out he didn't. Awful.

Celso Güity, honduran football forward who played in the 1982 World Cup has died at 63 https://hondudiario.com/2021/02/12/fallece-en-ee-uu-celso-fredy-guity-exmundialista-con-honduras-en-espana-82/ (in spanish)

Well, Guity never actually played, but that link reveals Luis Cruz died earlier this year. After searching, he died 27th January of COVID-19: https://proceso.hn/muere-luis-cruz-exseleccionado-hondureno-en-espana-1982/

Guity is the 6th to die but only Drummond, Figueroa and Luis Cruz (One game versus Northern Ireland) actually played.

Confused. Why isn’t Cruz featured in the team box for the 82 squad? :scratchhead:

He's down as Jose Cruz on that. It's all a bit messy to put it mildly.

The birth year threw me also. Wiki (I presume erroneously) has him as being a few years older.

Here I go again, mixing up Argentineans in my mind - I was confusing him with his strike partner at the '78 World Cup, Mario Kempes. Who could forget their classic pop hit Luces de Diamante?

And neither was he the Leopoldo Luque allegedly doling out the dodgy drugs that did for Diego.

The worst thing about that tournament was all the bits of ticker tape I seem to recall on the pitch(es). I think my OCD could have been triggered by that.

I remember how we all used to laugh at the long baggy shorts when they showed a bit of archive footage.  How fickle is fashion.
