Did Triple-O ever consider the fact that Willie McLean (USA, 1934) went missing? Admittedly, if he were still alive he'd be 113 this year so he probably is dead, but we don't have proof...

Not sure if mentioned already but Willie McLean's case was solved in June, 84 years after his disappearance.

https://theathletic.com/3363062/2022/06/14/wee-willie-mclean/

After his disappearance, McLean lived first in Chicago, and then moved to Davenport, Iowa in 1941. He changed his name to William Stewart Lang to avoid being found, working as a mechanic at a local garage. In 1946, McLean suffered another nervous breakdown and was institutionalized at the Mount Pleasant Mental Health Institute in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. He remained there for 13 years, undergoing electroconvulsive therapy and a transorbital lobotomy. In 1959, McLean was transferred to Pine Knoll Home in Davenport, a publicly-run assisted living facility, where he died on November 6, 1977 at the age of 73. McLean is interred at Cedar Park Cemetery in Calumet Park, Illinois.

Some pretty amazing details deep in that story:

Quote

The Christmas pageant that year was put on largely by residents of Mount Pleasant’s “sexual psychopath ward,” a 25-man unit comprised entirely of gay men

Kiril Dojčinovski, part of Yugoslavia's 1974 squad (but didn't make the field in any games), dead at 78. Is perhaps unsurprisingly the only person listed in this Wikipedia category:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Macedonian_expatriate_sportspeople_in_El_Salvador

That category sounds like the title of the kind of piffle you get at the top of the Sunday Times best-seller list!

I also received a letter from Gilbert Fisselet's son that unfortunately, he actually passed away on April 27, 2022. Transfermarkt has already put his date of death

https://www.transfermarkt.com/gilbert-fesselet/profil/spieler/302625

I've updated his Wiki using the EU Football site (as transfermarkt is user generated like Wiki so it isn't considered reliable).

That means the entire 1954 Swiss FIFA squad is now wiped out.

Piet Schrijvers, a member of the Dutch squad that lost in the finals of both the 1974 and 1978 World Cups is dead aged 75.

Was also in the Dutch squad for the 1976 European Championships, which they finished third in, and the 1980 edition.

In total, he won 46 caps for the national side between 1971 and 1984.

But in good news - there's a recent interview with Manuel Munoz from the 1950 World Cup - where he confirms team-mate Andre Prieto is also still alive. Munoz is a fair shout of the 4 remaining to be the last standing.

François Remetter dead at 94. Pretty sure he was the last remaining member of France's 1954 squad, and he was also part of the squad in 1958.

Sorry, I don't follow other topics, but as he was a World Cup player, I don't understand how it doesn't fit here

It does fit here. I was just quoting the answer to your question.

Omar Borras (1986, Uruguay)

Omar Borras, who as Uruguay manager in 1986 coined the "Group of Death" moniker, has died aged 93

This happened last week, @Octopus of Odstock, but a quick forum search suggested it hadn't been mentioned yet.

All Scotland had to do was beat his ten-man side. Sigh.

If he performs well and Denmark qualify for World Cup he could play in Qatar. Depends if he can play in the heat.

Has been called up to Denmark’s World Cup squad. Unless he gets injured between now and the first Match he will start for them.

He plays for Man U, he's a regular for them and Denmark again. Players are returning to the game with pacemakers etc but he's the first to do so after a cardiac arrest. I'm a bit wary tbh (but in a minority there).
