I drew up a list of the oldest famous people in January. Not one of the 8 oldest have died. Surely one or 2 of them must go soon. The nearest to die is Roberta McCain who was 9th on the list. They can't live forever !

Who are the 8 names out of interest?

Pretty sure Ruthie Thompson is one of the names, can’t say about the other seven though...

Even my stupidly long longlist only has nine people *currently* older than the late Roberta McCain and since that includes Kane Tanaka and the wife of a diplomat I'd struggle to call them famous.

Stanislaw Kowalski looks simply incredible at 110.

Since their ages are genuine, I hope he and Robert Marchand outlive that fucking fraudster called Fauja Singh.

:birthday:

Gail Halvorsen, the Berlin Airlift's "Candy Bomber", has turned 100.

And now he has the Corona:

Edit: Seems to be mild so far. He lives in a care home in Utah.

He is at very high risk. He has underlying issues and has been symptomatic for three days. Other articles adfirm he is "slightly improving" which implies he was worse than described here. Would be a shame if such a great man dies this way, but it is very likely.

Also worth noting that George P. Shultz turned 100 years old today. He was Secretary of Labor and the Treasury under Nixon and Secretary of State under nearly all off Reagan's 2 terms. Also surely one of the last living US cabinet members who served in WW2.

Edit: Yeah sorry, I saw he has his own thread and it was mentioned there already but whatever.

‘whatever’ meaning YW is post whoring.

He knows damn well that doesn’t belong here: “A thread for people who have passed the age of 100 but have (very, very) faint claims to fame other than "just being old".”

Two notable names on my radar joining the 100 club today:

Eddie Robinson (wiki), oldest living Major League Baseball player and last survivor of the 1943 Navy World Series.
Peter Lloyd OBE (
wiki), Australian aviator.

Both WWII vets, and both borderline chances of QOs I reckon.

Edit: Both dead now.

Relax. He's gone https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0547956/ https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/tucson/name/don-davis-obituary?pid=197322270

It's true there has been a strange lull in centenarian deaths lately. That can only mean a deluge of deaths over the christmas period. Brace yourself !

Haneh Hadad (wiki), Israeli police officer and Labor politician, died back in October aged 101, but it's only just been added to his Knesset profile.

Believe I'm right in saying he was the oldest living former member of the Knesset.

There are currently a couple of popular centenarians on the famousbirthdays site, names I'd also recommend for your pools:

Kane Tanaka, #1 in 1903 births

Fauja Singh, #5 in 1911 births. Even though Singh's age isn't probably that much.

Boris Pahor, #18 in 1913 births

Norman Lloyd, #5 in 1914 births

Ida Keeling, #22 in 1915 births

Marsha Hunt, #26 in 1917 births

Anne Buydens, #21 in 1919 births

Charles MgGee, #33 in 1919 births

Arlene Cody Bashnett, #42 in 1919 births

Tom Moore, #3 in 1920 births

and I'd list the possible soon-to-be centenarians here too:

Prince Philip, #1 in 1921 births

Iris Apfel, #22 in 1921 births

and Hazel McCallion, #26 in 1921 births.
