Another January 1920 born dead. Obviously only Western ones, Trevor Dannatt and him in quick succession. I expect Gottfried Bohm to be the next one. Out of them only David Musuguri, Charles Njonjo, Henry Hu will be left. Stefan Zywotko survived COVID in December, but that weakened him a lot. Theodore Geballe seems just a random guy.

So I was right again. Zywotko to be next, then Geballe.

It will be a hell of a final triple threat...

Never heard of him outside of this forum, but he won the Pritzker Prize, the Nobel Prize for architects. So he should get the broadsheet obits.

Or the Daily Mail. Gottfried Bohm (Boehm): https://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/ap/article-9673257/Gottfried-Boehm-architect-concrete-churches-dies-101.html

They thought he should enter hospice care, then he improved and has now recovered. An immortal in the making.

After a couple of deaths in May, we have our first June centenarians, here are some of them... I'd say these are a pretty strong trio:

James Francis Edwards, born 5th of June 1921. Canadian WWII pilot, with 19 aerial victories he was Canada's highest scoring ace in the Western Desert Campaign. He shot down Luftwaffe ace Otto Schultz (51 aerial victories) in 1942 and probably also Günter Steinhausen (40 aerial victories), later the same year. Picture from an interview on his 100th

Jakob Skarstein, born 7th of June 1921. Longtime radio journalist and personality since 1945.

Rode bikes until the age of 107/108, what a legend.

From 1911 left are Renée Simonot, Marita Quiros and Eileen Ash. Ash seems to still be in a pretty good condition, Quiros was holding a therapy doll in the last photo of her. Can't find new pictures of Simonot.

Still a stronger year (atleast has a larger amount of famous centenarians alive) than 1912 and 1913. 1912 has Dagny Carlsson, the Swedish blogger and Jessie Lichauco, American/Filipino philanthropist.

1913 is an men's only club with journalist Vance Trimble and holocaust survivior/writer Boris Pahor.

Boris Pahor is the only one left from 1913

06.07.1913 – 16.06.2021 Vance Trimble
26.08.1913 – ??.??.2021 Boris Pahor

Pahor was also the youngest of the bunch.

Last public appearance was his 107th birthday in August 2020. He looked and sounded frail. Guarantee he will not see the year out.

Which begs the question: is there anyone who won a world/continental title in any sport before World War 2 still alive?

Not a world title but Eileen Ash (born 30 October 1911) played Test cricket for England before WW2.

Floridian state senator Henry Sayler (wiki) died in late May aged 100.

Another from my longlist. Legacy obit.

Also a WWII veteran. His wife predeceased him in July 2020, aged 95.

Only Aiyappan Pillai (1914-2022), Man Kaur (1916-2021), Shyam Saran Negi (1917-2022), S. K. Paramasivan (1919-2022), V. M. M. Nair (1919-2021) and Yadlapati Venkatarao (1919-2022) left of India's 1910s famous people according to the "list of living centenarians".

1920 has Thanga Darlong (1920-2023), C.R. Rao (1920-2023), Raghunath Chandorkar (1920-2021) and 1921 this far has only P. K. Warrier (1921-2021).

10 centenarians.

Out of other top10 largest countries by population (other than the US), China has 7, the oldest being Ma Shitu and Song Ping. Indonesia, Pakistan and Bangladesh have none.

Brazil has agronomist Fernando Cardoso (1914-2021), primatologist Milton Thiago de Mello (b. 1916), professor Cleonice Berardinelli (1916-2023), athlete Frederico Fischer (b. 1917), actor, voice actor and hospice care survivor Orlando Drummond (1919-2021), businessman Alberto Dualib (1919-2021) and bishop Antonio Afonso de Miranda (1920-2021), but no new ones from during the last year.

Nigeria has the country's first chartered accountant Akintola Williams (1919-2023)

Russia has animator Leonid Shvartsman (1920-2022) and Mexico has bishop Francisco Raúl Villalobos Padilla (1921-2022)

It's not "surprising". The world's oldest man was born in 1909. I wouldn't expect there to be any famous men alive who are 2-3 years younger than the world's oldest.

There are a few names you missed from a list here.

https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/news/2021/6/emilio-flores-marquez-confirmed-as-the-worlds-oldest-man-living-at-112-665641

Puerto Rican Emilio Flores Marquez has been recognized as the world's oldest man today. He was born on 8th of August 1908 and this really changes a few things.

Means that since the death of Bob Weighton, Marquez has been oldest man in the world. Dumitru Comanescu (November 1908-June 2020) was never the oldest man in the world, neither was the unconfirmed Olimpio Martinez Pires (24th of August 1908-October 2020) or the person commonly said to be the current WOM, Saturnino de la Fuente Garcia (b. Feb 1909)

Marquez has had a pacemaker since he was 101 years old but according to the article, is still in good health. He helped his father on their sugarcane farm from a young age and was in WWII.

Looks a bit worse than Chitetsu Watanabe when he was recognized as the world's oldest man by Guinness World Records (and sadly, he died under two weeks later just ten days before his 113th)

Really hoping Marquez will get to 113 as the first person to do so since 2018 or 2019
