I tend to agree with this analysis. Cause of death was given as pneumonia, which would wipe out even some of the healthiest of centenarians.

Apparently he still took part in an event under a month ago, however in a wheelchair. Could still walk and stand in March 2021. The Indo-Pakistani war ended in December 1971, he took part in some celebrations and wrote his name in an electronic visitor's book.

 

Nine days later he was in critical condition at a hospital and apparently had lingered on life support since christmas eve

Seems her age was exaggerated. Someone keeps trying to edit her DOB on Wiki, and they're not wrong. Kuinova's real name was Panir Ibragimov according to her family on FB. She lived in Rego Park, NY.

The matching residency records on Ancestry tell us the truth. She was born 28 Dec 1926, not 28 Dec 1920!

Now WTF is it with ladies from the East lying to make themselves older, and ladies from the West lying to make themselves younger? The mind boggles!

Updated. The oldest notable Indian is now Shyam Saran Negi, teacher and voter who looks and sounds horrible and has been ill for ages but his time never comes.

Why Shyam, he's the fourth-oldest on the list? Well, the "top 3" are probably all longevity claimants. While Thimmakka is likely over 100, Singh is rumored to be 93 and who knows about Pappammal. 107 my ass, she's probably somewhere between 85 and 95.

So now India is left with:

 

1)Three fraudsters clearly exaggerating their ages: Fauja Singh, Saalumarada Thimmakka and Pappammal. Despite this all three seem on their way out, with Fauja now almost unable to walk and dangerously thin, Thimmakka in & out of hospital for years and Pappammal on a wheelchair and visibly frail.

2)The mighty Shyam Saran Negi, whose age is even likely true. Rumoured dead at least six times, seriously ill since January 2020, but is the last original Indian geezer with a realistic age, so kudos to the old guy.

3)Two politicos born in 1919. Not heard anything from Paramasivan in years, doubt he is even still alive. Venkatrao is unexplicably alive, having looked like a cadver for years and lost his whole family in 2021.

4)A bunch of youngsters: Mani Kumar Chetri, Thanga Darlong, B. B. Lal, N. Sankaraiah, C. R. Rao, Pravrajika Bhaktiprana (who is likely a fraudster), all with their share of health issues.

5)The upcoming, most notably rationalist Ravipudi Venkatadri, who has seemingly started to decompose while still breathing.

 

The decline in the last year has been swift.

Honestly, he doesn’t look that bad ! He seems quite sound of mind, still able to talk about his life and achievement for 30 minutes. Doesn’t seem at death’s door imo.

Re Everett Lee... how many living people have a portrait by Carl Van Vechten? You had to have one to be big in the 40s and 50s.

I asked this question a few years back. Annoyingly, I used to have a link to his full library of photographs, with the list of subjects, but I lost it. Must surely be online somewhere.

If I had to guess, I'd say maybe a couple of dozen subjects survive. Leontyne Price, Marilyn Horne and Harry Belafonte being several such examples.
