The 100 Club

Behind-the-scenes names aside, the first centenarian hitmaker of the Billboard Hot 100. A name that prospered far more on the earlier US charts granted, as one might expect of a big band figure!

His version of "Peter Gunn" is pretty good so nice to have him be the first.

Here's a picture taken yesterday, looks very frail and seems like he's been mostly bed/wheelchair bound for the last three or four years.

I guess it depends on your definition of hitmaker. Vera Lynn and George Burns each hit the Billboard Hot 100 and lived until at least 100. Lynn only had two minor hits in the rock era, but might've had more pre-1955. Burns only hit the chart once and was obviously not a singer.

Bob Hope also had a few minor hits before the rock era.

Vera Lynn charted early in the rock era, but didn't after the Hot 100 chart which began in 1958. George Burns was outside the top 40 - though tbf I didn't know until now he charted at all! Whereas Anthony made the top 10 in 1959 and the big charting hits was what I had in mind, as there might be another odd centenarian or two who peaked at #83 or something.

What would you say her Q/O chances are. To me she could Get a broadsheet obituary but by no means certain she will get anything.

As suspected, Earle Parsons is dead. There's an obit for him in this 2015 49ers magazine here. Died December 18, 2014, aged 93.

Still can't find anything for Don Johnson.

As Parsons is dead, I'm almost certain that Charley Trippi is the oldest former NFL player.

Don Johnson died in September 1965, aged just 44.

Death record.
Newspaper clipping.

Means that Charley Trippi (b. 1921) is undoubtedly the oldest living NFL player, with the second oldest being Pete Wismann (b. 1923), and the third being Dub Jones (b. 1924).

Doesn't seem to be a Centenarians DP pick.

Has anyone done a list of the most picked people in it this year? I'll list some of the ones picked over 5 times:

22: Boris Pahor (Author, holocaust survivor, 1913)

15: Marsha Hunt (Actress, 1917)

13: Kane Tanaka (World's oldest, 1903)

11: James Lovelock (Scientist, environmentalist, 1919)

10:

Nehemiah Persoff (Actor, 1919)

June Spencer (Actress, 1919)

Carmen Herrera (Artist, 1915)

9:

Philippe de Gaulle (Charles' son, senator, admiral, 1921)

Arnold Yarrow (Actor, 1920)

Gail Halvorsen (Berlin Candy Bomber, 1920)

8:

Francisco Morales Bermúdez (former dictator of Peru, 1921)

Luis Echeverria (former president/dictator of Mexico, 1922)

Lucile Randon (World's second-oldest, 1904)

Stanislaw Kowalski (Runner, 1910)

7:

Ben Ferencz (Nuremberg prosecutor, 1920)

6:

Al Jaffee (Cartoonist, 1921)

Agnes Keleti (Gymnast, 1921)

Marita Camacho Quiros (Former first lady of Costa Rica, 1911)

Charley Trippi (Football player, 1921)

Ma Shitu (Author, writer, 1915)

Caren Marsh Doll (Actress, 1919)

Josip Manolic (Croatian PM, 1920)

5:

Lloyd Geering (Theologian, 1918)

Iris Apfel (Businesswoman, 1921)

Art Rupe (Music industry executive, 1917)

Anthony Epstein (Pathologist, 1921)

Dagny Carlsson (Blogger, 1912)

Harry Goldsworthy (Lt. General, 1914)

Lise Nørgaard (Journalist and writer, 1917)

Anne Baker (Writer, 1914)

George "Johnny" Johnson (Last Dambuster, 1921)

Muezzez Ilmiye Cig (Archaeologist, 1914)

Could have made a mistake and counted some of them wrong. Trippi was also spelled Trippy and Halvorsen Halverson.

Out of the dead, Everett Lee was picked by 8, Leonor Oyarzun by 7 and Lawrence Brooks by 6 teams.

Would've thought that Tanaka would be the most popular pick but I'm not suprised it's Pahor. How the hell is he still alive, he has looked like a corpse for years.

Something new on Boris Pahor:

A presentation event thing honouring him will be held tomorrow. Not sure if he'll attend (probably not) but the protective measures are quite strict (only allowed for vaccinated people wearing FFP2s). Last time he was seen anywhere was around his 108th birthday, August/September 2021:

Also, the Danito Dolci Committee (whatever that is) wants him to be made the Honorary Mayor of Trieste.

Unmentioned before on the forum, and one you'd think was probably guaranteed a QO: Morton Mintz joins the 100 Club. He was the journalist who first broke the story that thalidomide was associated with birth defects. Looks in pretty rude health.

Another name I recently came across is British doctor James Elwood (wiki).

I wonder if anyone here remembers this story? In 2000 he hit the headlines after it was revealed he had misdiagnosed cancer in at least 222 patients over a 5 year period. He voluntarily struck himself off before he was pushed.

Anyway, according to the records on 192.com, he's still with us. Turned 100 at the end of 2021.

Interesting guy, he had looked frail for a while and was widowed when his much younger wife died last year. Seems to have been pretty notable in Malaysia, atleast had a ton of titles.

There’s around a dozen centenarians in the cent deadpool game who aren’t listed on Wiki’s ‘List of living centenarians. (and known for reasons other than just their longevity). I wonder how some of these people slip through the net and don’t get added to that list when they turn 100, especially when centenarians make the list who don’t even have a Wiki page or have only a foreign language one (shown in red on list).

Proper coverage of Ray Anthony's centennial here, including a picture of him at the celebrations. Still sharp-minded albeit poor of hearing:

So now India is left with:

1)Three fraudsters clearly exaggerating their ages: Fauja Singh, Saalumarada Thimmakka and Pappammal. Despite this all three seem on their way out, with Fauja now almost unable to walk and dangerously thin, Thimmakka in & out of hospital for years and Pappammal on a wheelchair and visibly frail.

2)The mighty Shyam Saran Negi, whose age is even likely true. Rumoured dead at least six times, seriously ill since January 2020, but is the last original Indian geezer with a realistic age, so kudos to the old guy.

3)Two politicos born in 1919. Not heard anything from Paramasivan in years, doubt he is even still alive. Venkatrao is unexplicably alive, having looked like a cadver for years and lost his whole family in 2021.

4)A bunch of youngsters: Mani Kumar Chetri, Thanga Darlong, B. B. Lal, N. Sankaraiah, C. R. Rao, Pravrajika Bhaktiprana (who is likely a fraudster), all with their share of health issues.

5)The upcoming, most notably rationalist Ravipudi Venkatadri, who has seemingly started to decompose while still breathing.

The decline in the last year has been swift.

S. K. Paramasivan dead at 102.

Qin Yi, Chinese actress, one of China's top actresses in the 50s/60s called the "Most beautiful woman in China" by premier Zhou Enlai is 100 today.

I think she has been mentioned here before (but damn her parents for making her name too short for the DL forum's search function) and was frail, wheelchairbound and at hospital on her 99th.
