The 100 Club

Forgot to mention at the time - Phyllis Kinney, American-born collector, performer and authority of Welsh folk music, turned 100 on 4 July.

She is the widow of Meredydd Evans, who was a towering figure in Welsh arts - he died at 95 in 2015.

Phyllis lives in a care home nowadays. Unlikely to obit in any major publications but I put her on DDP list for this year anyway. A fascinating person.

She'd been battling throat cancer for a while as mentioned here last year. Also very frail.

Here's the updated list of current notable (enough to have an English or Chinese wiki) Chinese/Hong Kong + Taiwan centenarians and those who will (or won't) be 100 this year:

Li Huanying 李桓英 (1921-) "Doctor who defeated leprosy", hospitalised around 2019? but seemingly recovered.

Li Huanying celebrated her 101st birthday this month.

That's premature by their standards.

Talking about decrepit Asian centenarians, here's Satya Mohan Joshi yesterday:

Looks much worse than a few months but still great for a 102-year-old who could have cancer or cancers and has been hospitalised in ICU, on oxygen twice this year (pneumonia + UTI in February, UTI + swollen heart + a-fib + dilated cardiomyopathy + acute kidney injury + traction fibro-bronchiectasis + pleural thickening in April) but I'd be suprised if he lived to 2023.

Another name I recently came across is British doctor James Elwood (wiki).

I wonder if anyone here remembers this story? In 2000 he hit the headlines after it was revealed he had misdiagnosed cancer in at least 222 patients over a 5 year period. He voluntarily struck himself off before he was pushed.

Anyway, according to the records on 192.com, he's still with us. Turned 100 at the end of 2021.

Finally uncovered a new death in the GRO Index.

James Elwood (wiki) died in the last quarter of 2021.

  ELWOOD, JAMES  STANLEY   1921
GRO Reference:  DOR  Q4/2021 in GLOUCESTERSHIRE  (488-1C)  Entry Number 523203363

Not entirely sure if he reached centenarian status or not (he was born around December). Unsurprisingly, given his notoriety, there were no death notices anywhere.

A probate search gives a death date of 13 December 2021. More than likely he did reach his centenary. If anyone can track down a DOB, you're a hero (unlike Elwood, who killed people).
