Whoever this dude is, multiple tweets are reporting that he died yesterday.

@Lafaucheuse, what's happening with French obits?

Scherer was pretty notable in left wing circles and as a gay icon, I thought Libération had a write-up ready for him.

Well, I know, that's strange... Usually french media are quite slow and don't care a lot about obits. A perfect exemple of that is Dominique Marcas, french actress who died on the 15th of february 2022 aged 101. She didn't score any obit despite 1) her appearance in some of the french most famous movies of the late XXth c. (les grandes vacances, Zig-Zag, Notre Dame de Paris…); 2) being one of the oldest french actresses (with Lucienne Legrand and Dorette Ardenne); 3) having been the supporting actress in a film with the french legend Arletty and 4) having a film were she was the lead role in 2001, so not that late ago. Media were aware of her death as she appeared in "In Memoriam 2022" sort of articles (here and here for example). I think they just simply don't care.

Another example is Pierre Parsus, dead at 100 on the 1st of january 2022 who only scored a local obit (so nobody red it) despite having been displayed in some of the most famous french art monument (MUCEM, le Pont du Gard…)

This is why I said before (can't remember where) that the whole obsession of obits seemed a little puzzling to me. Ullitzer has probably already scolded me about it but I'm pretty sure France is not very keen on obituaries. Expect for major figures when media wants to be the first ones to break the new (Le Monde is usually one of the first).

For Scherer, I guessed an obit would already have been published if they cared about. We'll see in a week or so but it wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't score one.

For the Chinese medical miracles series:

Shanghai politician Shi Ping has survived a serious COVID infection at 110. Anyway it left him permanently on oxygen and with a tracheostomy. New picture.

I can't speak for the UK but yes, in the Netherlands you can buy (part of) a page of newspaper to report on the death of a loved one. It's a personal choice to announce it this way, my grandparents (well, three of them as one grandma is still doing alright) and most of my greatuncles and -aunts had such a public "rouwadvertentie". Other families might prefer to keep the news private OIOW just tell people close to them or the deceased one.

I don't know what a "lambda person" is, but our local newspaper often carries obits of local residents. Mostly written and submitted by family members I think.  There's a charge for announcements in the BMD column, but articles are welcome as they help to Philippa Page (as Private Eye would say)

Not a lot of notable/"notable" 1918 names left. There being a small amount of 1916 notables was mentioned on the last page but I was suprised by how few 1918 names there are:

Only 12 with English wiki pages, 8 of them on the "living centenarians" list:

Lloyd Geering (26 Feb 1918) Theologian, him or Brenda Milner the most notable name out of these.

Elisabeth Waldo (15 Jun 1918) Violinist, composer, songwriter, conductor and ethnomusicologist

Angel Martín Taboas (18 Jun 1918 - 27 Oct 2023) Puerto Rico Supreme Court Associate Justice

Brenda Milner (15 Jul 1918) British-Canadian neuropsychologist

Beatrice Lumpkin (3 Apr 1918) Union organizer, doyenne of the US Communist Party

Paul Mwazha (25 Oct 1918) Zimbabwe clergyman/cultist, age disputed, could be around 10 years younger

Silvana Lattmann (8 Nov 1918 - 19 Jul 2023) Swiss writer

Ángeles Flórez Peón (17 Nov 1918) Spanish socialist militiawoman

The 4 ones not on the list:

Max D. Liston (16 Mar 1918) US pioneer in the development of instruments for infrared spectrophotometry and non-dispersive infrared analysis

Josephine Webb (21 Jun 1918) US Electrical engineer who obtained two patents for oil circuit breaker contact design

Antolín de Santiago (9 Oct 1918) Spanish politician

Adela Cabezas de Allwood (1918) Salvadoran physician

Joint page with another person, possibly living:

Miye Ota (26 Aug 1918) Judoka and ballroom dancer

No English wiki page, living:

Ilmari Koppinen (8 Jan 1918) Finnish professor and athlete

Alfons Tomke (16 Jul 1918) Polish activist

Bruno Segre (4 Sept 1918 - 27 January 2024) Italian lawyer, journalist, politician

Wen Jian (1918 - 7 November 2023) Chinese founding Major General

And of course there's a load of those who are long dead but there's no death date, for example Wang Chang-hui, Mohammad-Ali Molavi, Henry Satorius Bannerman, Pamela McGeorge, Xie Jianshun and Connie Lee.

I'd really like to know that happened to German violinist Max Kayser (wiki).

If this eBay picture of Kayser is titled correctly then that does look a lot like the Max Kayser found in this Facebook photo. Which would mean a) he was definitely still alive in 1988 b) was married to someone called Ursula c) lived in or near the spa town of Bad Salzuflen.

Edit: that has to be the Kayser we're looking for on Facebook, there's an LP of violin music behind him on the windowsill.

Thank You very much

So after France lost the world's oldest living person, it gained the world's oldest living Olympian and the world's oldest living actress.

Então, depois que a França perdeu a pessoa viva mais velha do mundo, ganhou o atleta olímpico mais velho do mundo e a atriz viva mais velha do mundo.

I found the Dominican Maria Cristina Camilo, born on 12/25/1918, I haven't found anything about her death yet

She was never the “world’s oldest living actress”. I removed that line from her Wiki page because it was never measured by an official body of any kind, but just stated by a bunch of Serbian journalists, who I seriously doubt conducted any real research.

Elisabeth Waldo had acting credits, is still alive, and was born before her anyway.

Thank you very much, Elisabeth really has an acting credit, playing a violinist in the movie, which was one of her professions, she did more music related work in the movies, working on the songwriting, not really an actress, but like made a character in a movie is to be considered an actress
