Bah. I knew I should've jokered him cause he was worth more than Mark Sims or Ben Suisala, but considered him too risky. Oh well.

And as an international sportsman, he's also genuinely famous.

How many rugby world cup winners have died? I know Lomu was in that final too, but he never won the cup, iirc.

1987 final: New Zealand 29 France 9

John Drake (NZ) died 2008

Jacques Fouroux (France) died 2005

1991 final: Australia 12 England 6

All still alive

1995 final: South Africa 15 New Zealand 12

Ruben Kruger (SA) died 2010

Kitch Christie (SA coach) died 1998

Jonah Lomu (NZ) died 2015

Not checking post-2000 finals because I'm 99% sure nobody's died from them

Thanks for that, Spade!

So 2 winners down, and Joost looking a good bet to be the third, and second from the same team then.

Looking further, can't imagine a case like Ruben Kruger (nailed on QO, terminal brain cancer, 39, internationally famous) would be entirely missed by the DDP these days!

I think it is true as his brother who was his carer was quoted as saying that.Joost is probably just in denial as he has to be positive for his children. For example even if he wasnt on oxygen the phrase going strong is ridiculously optimistic given recent photos.

Hmm, I would have considered Joost the biggest gamble in my team and only picked him for the 13pts. This goes faster than I expected. ALS progresses slowly, but it usually doesn't get better. So the ground you lose you can never get back.

Manson - been hospitalised, not dead.

George HW Bush - been hospitalised, not dead.

Joost - who knows?

Common thread - all on teams for me this year. And not dead. Yet.

8th year of MND, though. He's an outlier now.

Why do you all think relying on the ventilator means imminent death? Do you assume he will decide it's time and refuse life support?

Because it's being reported that he has deteriorated.

Health chief Qedani Mahlangu was to officially open the Joost van der Westhuizen Centre for Neurodegeneration at the hospital this week but it has been postponed after the stars condition dramatically worsened.
