Spanish Civil War Veteran(s)

Recommended Posts

By 2011 we'll be running short of notable veterans of the Spanish Civil War, I've got points riding on:

Santiago Carrillo

Amedeo Guillet

Lou Kenton and

Bernard Knox

dying by the end of the current CPDP, but if they stumble into 2011, they'll be doing very well to stumble out of the other end of it.

The last Scottish veteran of the Spanish Civil War, Thomas Watters, has died aged 99 years.

Edit: Apologies. I've just realised this is the wrong thread.

Santiago Carrillo is dead. Wikipedia claims there are 26 survivors left; I have no idea how accurate that is.

The last British survivor of the Spanish civil war International Brigade David Loman has died .So another era passes into history http://www.independe...94-8430522.html

Disappointing, considering the La Pasionaria's slogan ¡No pasarán!

The last survivng Canadian veteran of the Spanish Civil war has died at 97 http://www.ottawacit...9754/story.html

Indeed. That's why I posted his passing 11 days ago. (In the Canadian thread (him being Canadian) rather than the WWI Veterans' thread (him not being a WWI vet.)),

Nice post n'all, but this is like putting underpants in the knicker drawer. I'm sure I started a thread yonks ago designed to mop up survivors from various wars, campaigns etc. The SCW is probably not worth its own thread now if it hasn't yet got one but you can't just tag one war on to another like this. It's a taxonomic travesty.

Topic split from WW I veterans.

Roughly 3,000 Americans served in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade of volunteers during the Spanish Civil War; Delmer Berg (b.1915) is believed to be the last of them - he lives in California.

Spanish Civil War, the one Hemingway was in and wrote about. Fascists vs. Republicans. Fascists win, Franco comes to power. Maybe the veteran in California was on the losing side?

Fascists v Republicans v Communists , no?

Mostly only two sides:

Though it is still confusing to me how the republic sort of morphed into a socialist/communist force. Suddenly there was no more middle ground.

As I understand it, the Nationalists rebelled against the Republic, i.e. the legitimate state, and won.

Always remember it as a 3 ring circus. The Republicans went after the anarchists/POUM in barca. That they mainly used commie forces to go after POUM shows how fucked up it was, and that the shadow of Brother Joe was there as well as Brother Adolf.
