I think the committee will get one more chance to pick him.

Not then, but maybe now?

Yeah, the doctors probably gave him an estimate of how long he has left. Could survive till next year, could be dead next month.

Without prematurely burying him: Maradona, Muller and Greaves gone in the last year, Cruyff, Eusebio, Best and Puskas already there: who's the best living player when Pele goes? Guess you could argue Beckenbauer maybe? But different skill set. Definitely feels like a generation is coming to an end.

Rossi gone in the last 12 months as well. Beckenbauer arguably IMO. After that probably the likes of Van Basten even allowing for his injuries.

What about Sir Bobby Charlton got to be up there with Beckenbauer if/when Pele goes though how long Sir Bobby has with his dementia who knows? I agree though when Pele goes it will be like the end of an era.

Messi or Ronaldo, depending on which side of that particular debate you favour. Either is arguably the best even before Pele goes.

If you are looking for retired players, then Platini or Zidane are in the mix.

I'd be more looking at the oldest living greats POV. Be a while before the likes of  Messi, Ronaldo etc.  hold that mantle

One to keep an eye on is Just Fontaine, 89 next year and frail for years. Was one of the best of his time.

Would be astonished if he isn't on DLl 2022 and The Drop 40.

Pele's instagram christmas post here. Face looks a bit "slim", in a wheelchair.
