DCI Frank Burnside 3,887 Posted October 20, 2021 Man if he was to die in the next month. That'd be arguably 3 of the greatest players of all time gone within 12 months

RoverAndOut 4,746 Posted October 20, 2021 Without prematurely burying him: Maradona, Muller and Greaves gone in the last year, Cruyff, Eusebio, Best and Puskas already there: who's the best living player when Pele goes? Guess you could argue Beckenbauer maybe? But different skill set. Definitely feels like a generation is coming to an end.

After that probably the likes of Van Basten even allowing for his injuries.

What about Sir Bobby Charlton got to be up there with Beckenbauer if/when Pele goes though how long Sir Bobby has with his dementia who knows? I agree though when Pele goes it will be like the end of an era.

Messi or Ronaldo, depending on which side of that particular debate you favour. Either is arguably the best even before Pele goes. If you are looking for retired players, then Platini or Zidane are in the mix.
DCI Frank Burnside 3,887 Posted October 20, 2021 I'd be more looking at the oldest living greats POV. Be a while before the likes of Messi, Ronaldo etc. hold that mantle
Lafaucheuse 4,045 Posted October 21, 2021 One to keep an eye on is Just Fontaine, 89 next year and frail for years. Was one of the best of his time. 7 hours ago, An Fear Beag said: Messi or Ronaldo, depending on which side of that particular debate you favour. Either is arguably the best even before Pele goes.
