chel 376 Posted October 8, 2022 On 1 July 2022, the well-known Belarusian and Polish social activist and publisher, Count Aleksandr Pruszynski, passed away in Minsk (Belarus). Aleksander Pruszynski was the son of Polish poet and diplomat Xaverius Pruszynski. He was born in 1934 in Rogoznica estate in Grodno region. He emigrated with his family to Poland. He later lived in the US, France and Canada where he was involved in business and publishing. He took part in the election campaign in 1994. The extravagant Count Pruszynski was not allowed to run because he had not collected the necessary number of signatures for the nomination. But even then the mad agrofuhrer, as noted in a leaflet, "attacked the working office of Pruszynski". And the Belarusians are still reaping the fruits of nearly 30 years of dictatorship. Photo 1. Lord Jones of Cheltenham, or just Lord Jones. Not Lord Cheltenham. Also, already posted in Political Frailty by moi. Also, he’s not an aristocrat. Not like you to be off the mark gcreptile! I'm not going to lie... the whole House of Lords thing is a little obscure for me. Easiest way I can explain it to you is there are hereditary peers who inherit their titles after the previous holder (usually their father or brother) dies. These titles were all created between the 1300s and 1984. The easiest way to spot a hereditary peer is by their numbering e.g. “the 3rd Lord Monk Bretton” or “John Dodson, 3rd Baron Monk Bretton”. In 1958, a new law gave permission for the creation of “life peerages”. This allowed commoners to be given titles which would give them the right to sit in the House of Lords BUT when they die, so does the title. So it isn’t inherited, and thus these people are not part of the aristocracy. Nigel Jones is an example of a life peer. Today the House of Lords consists almost entirely of life peers. Of the ~800 members, less than 100 are hereditary peers. Around 1200 aristocratic families lost their right to sit in the House of Lords in 1999, when Tony Blair changed the law. However, they still retain their titles and their titles are still inherited once they die. Also, everyone with the title of “Earl”, “Viscount”, “Duke”, or “Marquess” is a hereditary peer (and thus an aristocrat) – these titles are all superior to “Lord/Baron”, with Duke being the highest title someone outside of the Royal family can hold. Does that help or is it still quite blurry?

Does that help or is it still quite blurry? Yeah, I didn't know that life peers are now in the vast majority. I thought they were the exception. Two weeks ago, I watched a video on Canada's upper chamber. The House of Lords now reminds me of this.

His son technically succeeded to his title, but it looks like he has never formally claimed it. Very strange case indeed. A contributing member of the House of Lords for 30+ years and senior aristocrat. Surely there must be a reason for their privacy. Edit: I see his widow, the Marchioness died on 25 February 2019. Her death notice is in the same source here.

Lord Balniel. A shortlisted name for me....back when I made my DDP debut. One of the dwindling members of the Heath Government (though a few usual suspects had very early minor roles ie Heseltine, Ken Clarke etc). Worth noting he was also chairman of the charity we now know as Mind, spent a lot of his parliamentary career campaigning for more money towards mental health care (which was an outlier fight even more than today 60 years ago), and helped expel the Church of Scientology from aforementioned charity for their quackery.
