Deathray 2,940 Posted May 2, 2015 The "Politics" and "Political Ranting Thread" threads were merged... My thread was meant to be friendly political discussions, but whatever. It would eventually lead to ranting anyway I think you need the context here, the Political Ranting Thread was a replacement for the original Politicians Thread, where we used to discuss non-death related politics until an eager mod merged it with the Political Frailty Thread. YoungWillz 21,028 Posted May 11, 2015 Waiting for Radguy to update us on the Polish elections, what is going on there? Some kind of run-off?
RadGuy 1,614 Posted May 13, 2015 Sorry, I haven't been on for a while. Anyways, as expected, there will be a second round on May 24th with Andrzej Duda and Bronisław Komorowski, as neither got 50%. But what wasn't expected is that Duda got more votes than Komorowski.

Fourth place was Janusz Korwin-Mikke with about 4%. Fifth place was Magdalena Ogórek with about 2%. The rest got about 1% or less.

Deathray 2,940 Posted June 5, 2015 Jeremy Corbyn enters the Labour leadership race. Now there is a candidate who actually stands for something. Has absolutely no chance of being on the ballot - even then he'll be a paper candidate.
Rotten Ali 600 Posted June 5, 2015 Jeremy Corbyn enters the Labour leadership race. Now there is a candidate who actually stands for something. Yeah, looking like a busker He really is one of the last lefties, but it's utterly unforgivable to wear a shirt with button down collars and not have them secured. That's play loose and cheap in my book.

But for a short while we can still try to believe that there are some socialist principles surviving in the Labour party rather than the synthetic centrist candidates who seem to be falling over each as they clamber to the right. He may get nominated by people who wouldn't actually vote for him in order to make the field look more interesting. David Miliband signed Diane Abbott's nomination papers in 2010. gcreptile 10,964 Posted June 5, 2015 Ok, I don't know much about the inner life of the Labour Party but I've been wondering why Tom Watson isn't the leader. The few times I watched him, he impressed me.
Bibliogryphon 9,570 Posted June 8, 2015 Ok, I don't know much about the inner life of the Labour Party but I've been wondering why Tom Watson isn't the leader. The few times I watched him, he impressed me. He wants to be deputy leader. He has a little bit of baggage which is I think why he hasn't gone for leader but there is still the future. Bibliogryphon 9,570 Posted June 15, 2015 Jeremy Corbyn manages to get enough nominations to get on to the leadership ballot paper. It cost £3 to become an affiliate member of the Labour party and thereby be eligible to vote in the election.

It cost £3 to become an affiliate member of the Labour party and thereby be eligible to vote in the election. Sadly can't see him getting to the second round let alone winning the thing. This is it. The ballot paper will contain four names. With One Member, One Vote on an alternative vote basis. There is no electoral college. Jeremy has the advantage of being different. It is impossible to put a sweet wrapper between the other three candidates positions. If you were just electing a leader of the opposition then Jeremy would be the best but I do not think he will be considered as Prime Minister material by most of the country. DevonDeathTrip 2,358 Posted June 16, 2015 Wouldn't be funny if Corbyn won? I was wondering if Tories might try to sabotage the vote by paying £3 each and voting in huge numbers for Corbyn. If this happened in conjunction with a leftie online campaign for Corbyn, it might be doable. . It would make the Government's next 5 years much easier if they were up against him. I do not think that it would make the government job easier whilst in office but it would probably increase thier chances of winning in 2020. Corbyn would call everything without fear of what the public would think. They would probably oust him in 2018 and Dan Jarvis would take over.

Ah, in America it's called "ratfucking". It's generally beleived that Nixon did something like that to have an easy opponent in 1972. Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill did the same in her election in 2012 and was successful in getting a nutjob opponent she managed to defeat easily (Todd Akin). I was in New Hampshire in the run up to the primaries in 2012 and all the Democrat supporters that I was talking to were voting for Rick Santorum because they though Obama would wipe the floor with him.
