En Passant 3,741 Posted November 14 Edit: Contrary to what those on the right (yes including you MyMango) may think, I do understand that many voted on the basis that they always voted Republican in the name of Small State and low taxes and not necessarily for the man. Also that the economy actually did better in his previous term than the succeeding democrats (though that is probably more chance than anything active). Even that his trade protectionism may be good for American jobs in the short term. I still do not understand how anyone could vote for that abhorrent excuse for a human, except possibly because he was the only man in the race - which is I suppose a reason, albeit a rubbish one. The Old Crem 3,608 Posted November 19 The Farmer’s protest seems to be the first time a lot of celebrities are willing to be vocal for more right wing views on social media. Opinion polling shows the public support the protestors because as is always the case Inheritance Tax is deeply unpopular whenever it is surveyed

I wonder across the western/democratic world how many people who were leaders during covid managed to get re-elected? Not just covid but also global fuel rises and inflation hitting people in the pockets.
Toast 16,145 Posted November 19 Re the inheritance tax on farms. I imagine what the government is trying to do is catch the billionaires who have bought up farmland as a tax-avoiding measure. But setting the bar at £1m is way too low. Similar mistake they made with the winter fuel payment - too many of the less well-off caught in the net.

I wonder if they should have done something that put the bar a lot higher for those whose ancestors have owned or worked that land as well So the traditional farming communities and what the public think when they think of a farmer are not affected by it. The arising of this story suggests they've run out of government news to attack and now have to go for relatively minor things about specific MPs. This was essentially the crux of beer gate.

As I have said before I think there is a chance Reform win the 2029 election due the Tories failing to regain their popularity and Labour losing it rapidly. The Sunday Express a couple of days back ran a long piece by Nadine Dories suggesting the best hope for a quick Tory comeback was to get Boris back in parliament and back as leader The Express - as I keep mentioning - has lost approximately 90% of its readers in a little over 30 years.

The Old Crem 3,608 Posted yesterday at 12:15 Dame Andrea Jenkyns has switched to Reform and is going to be their candidate for Lincolnshire mayor which was tipped a while ago as a mayoralty that Reform could win based on the demographics of the area and their election results there in July. His pa died in 2010. His ma is still alive but handed the family home over to DC's elder brother. I imagine they gave everything away in time to avoid inheritance tax. The brother died last year, so I'm not sure what the situation is now. He was married with two children. There are a couple of sisters in the mix too. I will make some enquiries as I know people who know them.
