Vagrants, Tramps, Homeless Eccentrics And Hermits

Recommended Posts

Homeless "Mr Butch" of Boston, has died in a scooter accident, aged 56:

No, I'd not heard of him either, but I was interested to see that he is a "YouTube" celebrity and has a Wiki entry!:

The BBC are reporting that the Wolverhampton roundabout hermit Josef Stawinoga has passed away. While not an eccentric of the same magnitude and fame as Mr Trebus, he surfaced in the media occasionally and was undoubtably famous in his own locality,

Sounds as if the dead "tramp" was a genocidal Nazi thug in hiding. My guess is Martin Bormann. See BBC report on this page.

Perennially intoxicated parochial recidivist Alvin Cote, 59. Apparently much loved in his native Saskatoon, where he was arrested 843 times for drunkenness.

Cote was the subject of a more in depth article in Saskatoon's Star Pheonix newspaper only a couple of months ago.

Anne Naysmith, formerly a concert pianist, who then spent nearly forty years living rough in Chiswick, has died after being run over by a lorry. There is a nice obituary for her in today's Telegraph.

It occurred to me that the homeless have no home thread of their own on Deathlist, so I thought I'd set up a shelter for them, so to speak. I also thought that notable hoarders of the Mr Trebus variety could be included here.

Edit - honourable mentions here should go to: Dwarf actor Bryant Crenshaw, Aussie Glam Rocker William Shakespeare and boxer Kirkland Laing, who all experienced homelessness before they died.

The term famous hermits doesn't compete the whole point of being a hermit is nobody knows who you bleeding are.

Could always rename the thread to "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves"

Does a hermit have to have been a hermit his whole life? I mean can they for instance have written a famous book 50/60 years ago and then live the rest of their life cut of from society?

No and yes, respectively.

As I understand it, in the Middlw Ages going back and forth between hermitship and society wasn't unusual. Some hermits became famous and drew crowds, e.g. Symeon the Stylite (~390 - 459). In Dutch we know him as Simeon de Pilaarheilige.

regards,

Hein

James Robinson, the Detroit man who had to walk to work 33 kilometers to work and got a car and fortune from a good Samaritan, is receiving death threats by envious persons. Was bound to happen.

That's cuz the poor guy lives in the ghetto and the newspaper PUBLISHED that donations to the tune of $350,000 came his way. Friggin idiots.

Article alludes to Colin "Ozzey" Osborne's minor internet stardom; but he sounds like Grimsby's town drunk. Place obit where best served, dustbin included.

Oda le Noble, a homeless "streetmusician" who played the tambourine and occasionally "sang" gibberish has died...

I used to live near Nijmegen and am familiar with her and her "music"(she always stood at the same spot), but outside of Nijmegen no one would know who she is... so i was a bit surprised when her dead somehow made the nationwide news here in Holland (Dutch teletext was reporting it)...

It's always been a mystery to me why the nation and its media cannot show a bit more interest in such people before they die and perhaps ensure they are not homeless.

NB. you still have teletext? Crikey.

"Andy Carbon also known as ‘Push Up’ of Boetica who resides in Roseau was diagnosed with rectum prolapse..."

I used to have a pet skunk (polecat) who had this affliction a few times, and we will leave it at that.

Isobel Varley, formerly the world's oldest tattooed senior citizen, has died. Sorry if this has already been reported.

This made me think of Tom Leppard, who may also be a good deadpool pick. He'd definitely get an obit.

After spending twenty eight years in the armed forces, Mr Leppard made the unusual career move of having his entire body tattooed with leopard spots, whereupon he moved to a remote part of the Isle of Skye and spent the next two decades wearing a loin cloth and living in a cave.

He retired from this lifestyle a few years ago and now lives in more conventional dwellings on the island.

Convinced that only in the UK does the media--or local denizens--glorify the homeless (we choose to ignore them altogether, which may be a fundamental problem, but as for the media is exactly as it should be), I am posting a random U.S. entry.

I'm entitling it: Black Men Can't Swim (save the comments). The shocking part of this story is how it begins with two homeless fellows drinking early in the morning. Glad I was sitting down when I read that.

I'm sad to report the death of Travis Linton Galleymore, a well known Big Issue seller in Devon, who supplemented his income by spending considerable periods of time upside down with his head in a bucket.

I met and chatted to Travis several times (when he was the right way up) and he was a lovely man. He had emigrated from South Africa to the UK to improve his prospects, but things didn't work out for him and pride stopped him from returning home. He struck me as a poor, lost soul and while I am upset to hear of his untimely death, I'm not that surprised.

His death was covered by The Independent and there is footage Travis suffering for his art in Exeter High Street here.
