themaninblack 2,112 Posted November 28, 2006 Well done to our very own Death Watch Beatle (Brown Bread) who has had four hits in about a month and rocketed up in equal 7th place. Respect! I'm slowly inching out of the top ten....
Octopus of Odstock 2,137 Posted November 29, 2006 So I guess the DDP will still be staying on giving points in a banded layout, but with the lower band starting at aged 16 and rigged to giving more value to young ill people that those who die in old age. I was going to add one or two further suggestions should they run with the 125 point hit minus age. The only trouble with that suggestion is so many people fudge their age their would be a big argument about how many points should be awarded. For example this year, Lou Rawls, Al Lewis, Charlie Williams, to name just three. Then there's those who we don't know the birthdates for... I think it's better in the bands, saves a lot of arguments...
Rotten Ali 600 Posted November 29, 2006 Just had this Email from the DDP:- OK, it's been a week since we canvassed your opinions, and the initial flood of responses has slowed to a trickle, so thanks for all your votes, and the decisions on next year's rules & scoring are as follows... Firstly, under-16s (rather than under-18s) will be banned from being picked. Voting was split pretty much 50-50 on this question, so we decided to go for a compromise. As someone pointed out, 16 is the age when people can (in the UK at least) legally buy cigarettes to set themselves on the way to the grave, so it seems an appropriate cutoff point! Secondly, about 85% of you voted for the new scoring system, so that's carried, with some changes to the age bands, including 2 new ones to award fewer points for really ancient coffin-dodgers: 16-29 years: 12 points 30-49: 10 50-59: 9 60-69: 8 70-79: 7 80-89: 6 90-99: 5 100-109: 4 110+: 3 Most of you seemed to like the proposed bonuses, so they'll be as previously described, i.e.: +1 point for a unique pick +2 for a celeb who dies on the 13th of any month +3 for murder, suicide or accident (but not execution) +5 for a celeb who dies on their birthday or Xmas Day Joker: Take the total of all the above and double it. Enjoy the rest of DDP2006, and all of you will be receiving invites to join the '07 competition shortly! - SB & RK

Carry on as normal then...
Death Watch Beatle 41 Posted December 1, 2006 Well done to our very own Death Watch Beatle (Brown Bread) who has had four hits in about a month and rocketed up in equal 7th place. Respect! Thanks for that DDT, I was away last week and made a point of reading no newspaper, watching no TV and having no internet access so the email from the DDP was a much appreciated welcome home present. By the way, the moon is lovely this time of year. DWB
Rotten Ali 600 Posted December 8, 2006 I've asked the question elsewhere in the forum about the DDP lower age limit for the stated reasons. I would like to answer myself here so to speak. Might it be better if we did not use either the 16 or 18 year old minimums this next year but that of 17 (on the 1st of January) to remove the moral question being raised in this site? Windsor 2,224 Posted December 11, 2006 Yes. I got that email too... Ali - 16 is a decent enough cut off age. Not like there is much of a difference between a 16 and 18 year old (except for the obvious 2 years).
themaninblack 2,112 Posted December 11, 2006 Only Brown Bread and myself reside in the top ten without scoring joker points...
Octopus of Odstock 2,137 Posted December 11, 2006 Much to my immense surprise, and relief, I am still (just) in the Top 10, as equal 10th. I'd be chuffed with that, if still the same on 31st Dec, not least as this year has been more luck than anything.

Octopus of Odstock 2,137 Posted December 11, 2006 Who on your list that's left do you think might snuff it by the years' end? Astor, Papon & Shamir would be my best bets, Papon perhaps the most. I would've said del Toro but I can't see him going right after Hardy & Bolden. Ford, Allingham, Rolt and Shriver maybe outside chance. Michael Foot, Mohammed Zahir Shah & Phil Taylor - no chance. All will be alive come Jan 1st.
Tuber Mirum 125 Posted December 12, 2006 According to this, Dame Helen Gardner died in 1986. The name is spelled differently (twice in the same article), but it seems to be the same ex-old lady.

Not so sure... Wrongipedia says that that Helen Gardner was born in 1908 and they seem to have different occupations. Either way, not worth the risk of picking her I'd think. Well according to the same source, that is the same lady who was a witness at the Lady Chatterley trial. It'd be more likely for a literary critic to do that than the Chief Clerk of Buck Pal. So if they are two different people, the DDP people have got them confused too.

More links here which give more clues. I have failed to find any evidence of the existence of the lady listed in DDP. There is an actress of the same name born in 1884 but I don't suppose she is still alive!

Captain Oates 21 Posted December 12, 2006 This may be of some help. Doubt if she was a witness at that trial though. That's hardly a reliable source - it could have been lifted directly from the DDP 2005! I wonder if Duke, Hardwood Surround, Toasted Brown Bread, or Whittaker's Choice can enlighten us? Which one of you is planning to guarantee the requisite obituary?

Considering the DDP rule changes, not many of them will be on the 07 list, so if they're got to go, they've got to go soon... 3 of them maximum will be on my 2007 list, but in all likelihood it may just be Papon.... Oh, by the way, Dame Helen Gardner & Dame Helen Gardiner are two completely different people. I was watching the documentary about the Lady Chatterley Trial. Dame Helen Gardiner is still alive, and listed in the Independent newspaper Birthdays column, as seen here in 2002. and 2005. But Dame Helen Gardner was the woman at the trial of Lady Chatterley's lover. Mrs Gardiner will get an obit, if only in the Independent (much like Sir Edward Ford etc.) But essentially, with the new rules coming in, it ain't worth the 4 points, surely? Cowboy Ronnie 78 Posted December 12, 2006 A left brainer writes: would the fly get an obit? I'll set up my own little website, call it cowboyronnieuknews.co.uk, and it will consist of exactly one item - an obit on the living room fly. Interestingly, this will make said fly more famous than approximately 40% of the people selected on various DDP teams.
