When you're a Jet

You're a Jet all the way,

From your first cigarette,

To your last dyin' day.

Stephen Sondheim was a genius of the theatre. RIP.

His death was as unexpected as getting to 91 to begin with, at least to me. RIP

Had an inkling that he might be someone we'd lose suddenly/without much warning (or at least as suddenly as it can be when you get up to his age) but I still thought he might have had a couple of years left.

Really saddened by this, an absolute titan and master of his craft.

It’s a surprise the frail Glynis Johns, who Send in the Clowns was written for, has outlived him.

I've been suggesting Sondheim to go on the list for at least two years now. Ah well.

Definitely doesn't seem like the timing was expected at all. Adding to that, he did an interview with the NYT just this past Sunday that's now been published. He was even asked about his health at one point:

Quote

He was having a little trouble getting around — using a cane, seeking assistance to get in and out of chairs, and in obvious pain when walking — which he attributed to an injury. Asked about the state of his health, he answered by knocking on a wood table and saying, “Outside of my sprained ankle, OK.”

I have never been a fan of musicals but Stephen Sondheims songs were masterpieces.A sad loss.91 is a good age and at least he was alert and semi mobile until the very end it seems.

Lee Lawson, described as a Broadway legend in one article, and as a TV actress on Guiding Light in the probably less informed Daily Mail article, has died of both COVID and cancer at 80:

This obit wins the award for most words between the deceased’s name and the announcement ‘has died’ in a single sentence.

Bob LuPone, who as an actor earned a Tony Award nomination in the original run of “A Chorus Line” and played Tony Soprano’s family physician, and also helped found and lead the influential off-Broadway theater company MCC Theater for almost 40 years, has died. He was 76.
