16.   Rachel Pollack (1945)

Some indication that Rachel Pollack may have died this morning - Neil Gaiman mentioned she was on her way out yesterday, so entirely plausible she has gone.

Created the first trans superhero for DC Comics' Doom Patrol.

Obviously awaiting some kind of news report to confirm.

American writer of historical fiction John Jakes, died at 90 years:

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/14/books/john-jakes-dead.html

He was best known for The Kent Family Chronicles and the North and South Trilogy. He was also known for his Brak the Barbarian science fiction series.

He would have qualified for ‘I didn’t know he was still alive’ for me.

Finnish crime writer Harri Nykänen most known for creating the character Raid dead at 69. One of the most known modern Finnish crime writers (Reijo Mäki and Seppo Jokinen are the largest ones), the tv series and movie based on his books were widely popular in Finland in the early 2000s. A few years I started and then abandoned reading his biography on Kaufmann. Too...cloying.

Nothing on the internet, but I have heard from a reliable source that author and television producer Charles Garland (IMDB) was fairly unwell with pneumonia last December. He has more or less recovered by now, though.

Was reminiscing today about reading William Kotzwinkle's work (best known at the guy who wrote the ET novel and its sequel). Still alive (maybe 80 later this year) but interestingly, back in action writing detective fiction after years away. Obitable for sure and easily searched on any website like this for anyone keeping tabs on talent. Wikipedia says 1943 for year of birth, other - older - sources suggest 1938.
