The EU Referendum Hokey Cokey

Recommended Posts

8 minutes ago, paddyfool said:

The country as a whole are apparently split 50:50 on the question of whether there should be a second ref or not: https://whatukthinks.org/eu/questions/do-you-think-there-should-be-a-second-referendum-to-accept-or-reject-the-terms-of-britains-exit-from-the-eu-once-they-have-been-agreed/

Millenials obviously make up much less than half the adult population, and are not going to be unanimous, so it can't just be down to them.

Meanwhile, which way people would vote if there was a second ref would be very much in doubt, as the polls remain very near 50:50 on this question as well, albeit with a narrow and very slowly growing lead for Remain (see the top four links here: https://whatukthinks.org/eu/opinion-polls/uk-poll-results/).  There's not much shifting among people who voted either way last time; mainly the shift is in people who didn't vote saying that this time, they'd go to the polls and vote Remain, and demographic shift, with new young voters mainly wanting to Remain. It would be interesting to see how this turns out...

No it wouldn't.

And what about the fact that the last vote was Leave?

We can’t carry on with this farce of ‘I didn’t like the result let’s rerun it’

We have 5 months and 3 weeks till we leave. Leave we will do now. It’s too late for anything else.

The vote should have been for England to leave the United States.

We've yet to see a workable plan for it though. The Chequers plan is a bad joke, the ERG plan is worse, and as the old saying goes, failure to plan is like planning to fail.  Why should we go ahead with it without even having a plan?

Article in the Economist notes that lukewarm/cultural Anglicans were more likely to vote leave. Devout Anglicans and non-conformist Protestants had a more internationalist outlook and voted remain:

Now that me and the Labour Party are open to the possibility of a second referendum on the final deal depending on what Theresa May brings back to parliament, what do you think our chances are of winning the next general election?

That's what happens when people create yet another account and write a load of shite because they think it will stop people from knowing who they already are on here.

I considered making that comment too, but at least he didn't say "myself and the Labour Party".

Even as the Brexit secretary illustrates how little he had understood of the workings of the UK economy, https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-46142188, one of his colleagues rapidly gets off the bridge of the Brexitanic as the iceberg comes closer https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-46155403

EDIT: Meanwhile, food companies are investing in stockpiles ahead of anticipated border issues https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-wales-46127592

In my opinion, we would be wise to do the same.

We're obviously not going to starve to death, it's mostly the sections full of just-in-time imported stuff (eg fresh fruit and veg) that could well be empty for a while. It's worth having a bit of tinned / frozen / jarred / dried alternative in stock (but obviously that's a good idea anyway).

There was a time when a British child had never seen a fucking banana. We also managed to get through WW2 and not starve to death. I find the scaremongering and the utter fuckwombles that swallow it chapter and verse to be utterly staggering in stupidity.

Lets not forget that all that imported food that we, obviously, cannot possibly live without, will be sitting there in european ports, the sellers unable to shift it here, not getting paid and nowhere else to send it.

Terrible.

We'll see. But whatever you hope for, it's generally sensible to prepare for delays if a whole new customs regime is about to be put in place at all of our ports.

Perhaps just perhaps we’ll go back to just eating seasonal food like when I was kid.

You  had fresh strawberries for a short few weeks not the whole year. Same with asparagus and peaches as other examples.

Ive always got tinned goods in ( child of the 70s).

If if it gets grim it’ll be rationing . Heck that will do us the power of good loose weight and healthy diet.

But panic buy? No way.

Preparing by storing some extra supplies now is the exact opposite of panic buying, and should in fact spare people from being caught up in or overly impacted by panic buying come the time.

Failure to plan, on the other hand, is effectively planning to fail.
