There were two people that were rumored to be the shooter, both inmates named Stephen Paddock (one of them was a sex offender, but he was 49 y/o, the second one was 36), it seems like the confirmed killer is none of them.

Stephen Paddock being reported as the killer is also apparently 60+

Also, they're looking for his companion, who I suspect might already be dead somewhere...

Yes. As much as I know he wasn't known to the FBI (unlike the two I've mentioned), but they didn't confirm if he was known to the local police.

To be fair about this point, there were like 3 guys with the same name that were being blamed, one of whom was a sex offender. So, I get why they'd get confused there.
