Thoughts On The 2016 List

Recommended Posts

We are now two deaths behind 2003 & 2013. Three behind 2015 & five behind 2008. Still ahead of mediocre year 2014. Someone on that list has to be looking a bit grim

I wouldn't worry, Biblio. There are five months left, and a fair amount of low lying fruit as people put it. June 2015, December 2013, July 2007 are all examples of 4-5 people going in the one month, and September 2003 and March 2002 are good examples of 4 people going in the one week. We're never consistent on the when, but by December 31st the 2016 list will be on 10-14 hits like usual.

As for looking grim...Havelange, MT Moore (no news lately), van der Westhuizen, Scales, Vera Lynn (allegedly in frail health), Leslie Philips, Pirsig (according to fellow forumers), Glen Campbell, Greaves, Banks, Noakes seem to be. And that's not counting the ancient, who are a good source of Deathlist success.

I see 2 more dead by the end of the year and no record broken. Better luck in 2017.

I am going to say three more. One from the remaining top five.Either Richard Adams or Peter Sallis and one UK sport related.

Keeping my options open.

This is an orphaned post of sorts, but this sort of thread is the best place for it, without a "Who should go on the 2017 list" thread, and please, no one start that in effing August.

Spoiler tagged for stupidly long

So the wean was up to all hours last night, which allowed me to do much of the donkeys work on this post. Each year we hear people say "Oh so and so should be on the list" and it made me wonder if we took the years and ages of every person in a profession to be on the Deathlist itself, could we then extrapolate the type of people who might be considered in 2017 and beyond? Almost certainly not, but never mind.

So I collated a list of debuts on Deathlist, separated by professions, and with the age they were given on the front page for their debut.

ie:

Average – 1987-2016- 77.7

Average – 2006-2016 -84

Verdict: Modern Deathlist tends to go for the older actor. The average for 2012-2016 would be higher than even 84, as there has only been one acting type picked under the age of 80 since, and that was Valerie Harper. A glance suggests that the age of 87 is the lower limit for Age Related Picks, as the actors aged 80-84 who were picked, Ed Asner aside, all had health issues. That being Nimoy, Scales, Moore, and Kercheval and O'Toole's demons would count here too I guess. Otherwise, you are looking for people born 1930 and earlier for 2017.

Survival Rate - 13/40 for debuts since 2006.

Five Year Survival Rate (not including 2013-16 debutants): 26%

Potential Deathlist future picks in next five years: Gene Hackman, Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery (returning), Andrew Sachs, Patricia Routledge, Mark Eden, Sidney Poitier, etc.

Thoughts: The Deathlist committee have a nose for aged actresses about to snuff it. Maureen O'Hara, Lauren Bacall, Luise Rainer and Elaine Stitch all survived less than 20 months from their Deathlist debut. This is ominous news for Mary Tyler Moore and Prunella Scales, and indeed for Liz Smith. They like a thespian just turned 80 odd, with a history of ill health. Looking at those potentials for 2017 include Vanessa Redgrave, Jack Nicholson, and forum favourite Burt Reynolds as examples.

There's always been a heavy flow of new thespians so at least 2 new spots in 2017 will be taken by them.

    average age 2006-2016 – 72.3

Verdict: If I were any of the football trio of debuts for 2016, I'd be very worried. Deathlist has a strong streak in the last decade of picking out doomed sportsmen. The cancer riddden (or otherwise ailing) sportsperson has been a long standing vein of success for the Deathlist since its foundation. A mere 21% of all sports people picked prior to 2016 are still with us, and that includes some duff picks like Peter Shilton and Leo Beenhakker making that survival stat look more impressive than it is.

Survival Rate (last decade) 6/13
Not Counting 2016 - 2/8

Five Year Survival: 50% (figure improved by less chosen in last decade)

Potential Future Picks: As this is sorted by people being seriously ill, hard to say. Nobby Stiles ought to have a good shout. I was wondering if the ailing Pakistian cricket captain might sneak on, but, whilst there is a steady stream of cricketers over the years, they tend to be from English speaking countries. I know sod all about cricket, though. The ALS thing gives Ricksen a shot. An opening for the 1966 English lot means I can see more of them showing up in future years. We're only just reaching the point where most of the name footballers of the 60s/70s are starting to reach old age. Commentators are a big area, but I don't know who is who in that realm anymore. Andrew Castle's a bit young...sadly. Sir Roger Bannisters a potential.

Thoughts: In short, if you're ill, and you were in cricket or horse racing, you've got a good chance. Football (soccer) is on the rise, but there's also the odd golfer (though the only one in the last decade had a brain tumour) and boxing.

  62. 2016 – Jimmy Carter, 92
  63. 2016 – Jacques Chirac, 84 (4768)
    average 1987-2016 – 75.6
    average 2006-2016 – 80.3

Verdict: Another steady line of Deathlist picks. It seems if you were in charge of a big enough country, and you live long enough, you'll find your spot at some time. Though outwith the US/UK, it does help to be noteworthy. Valery d'Estang is pushing 90, but who remembers him? World Leaders tend to have staying power. Once they make the list, they tend to bed sit until they snuff it.

Survival rate (2006-15): 7/14

Five Year Survival rate (1987-2012) - 66%

Possible Future Picks: Assad should he reach 2030 and the game is still afoot. On the Gough Whitlam precedent, Bob Hawke might need to survive another 8 years to make the list, and the gossip is that might be some ask. 84 is the youngest age for health ex-Presidents, so some time before Bush Jr, Clinton and Obama trouble the list. Although Bill might on health grounds at some point. Ditto our relatively young alumni Prime Ministers. Jalal Talabani, Mahmoud Abbas, Gorbachev, Raul Castro, and Liam Cosgrave are the types of people who might show up on future Deathlists.

Verdict: The politicos who weren't world leaders. Tends to start at 88 these days unless health conditions known.

Survival Rate (2006-15) - 40%

Five Year Survival: 46%

Verdict: This is not my area of expertise.

Survival Rate: 20%

Five Year: 33%

Potential Future Picks: Err... I.M. Pei? Steve Ditko?

There's other things you can extrapolate from the data lined out like that, but that can wait for another day or person.

One thing it does remind - years do even themselves out over the course, so we can expect at least four more deaths before the end of the year. Also, the Committee tend to react to underperforming years. So if 2016 does underperform, the 2017 Deathlist will be a cracker.

So does the numbers back up my Logjam theory, in which people who hang on the list for years tend to go in sudden bursts? Well, yes and no. Obviously, everytime someone goes, others build up their number of appearances, so the culls never look as impressive in the stats as they might do otherwise. However, it is evident that the last two times the "always theres" got so high in number, law of averages brought on a spring cleaning from the Reaper soon after. So it is my current theory, based on precedent, that if nothing much happens in the next four months, at least a good half dozen will fall in 2017 from the list below.

  1. 14 – Kirk Douglas,
  2. 13 – Fidel Castro,
  3. 12 – Jake Lamotta,
  4. 10 – Zsa Zsa Gabor, Rev Billy Graham,
  5. 9 – Olivia de Havilland,
  6. 8- Vera Lynn, Fats Domino,
  7. 5 – Joao Havelange, Herman Wouk, Henry Kissinger, Jerry Lewis, Ian Brady,
  8. (potential 5s) – Sallis, Prince Philip, C James, Dole, Bush Sr, Norden,

And now, if you don't mind, I have a meeting to catch at Bibliogryphon's Listaholics Anonymous...

Deaths of People with 5 or more appearances on Deathlist per year:

  • 1994 - 1
  • 1995 - 1
  • 1996 - 2
  • 1997 - 4
  • 1998 - 3
  • 1999 - 2
  • 2000 - 2
  • 2001 - 3
  • 2002 - 2
  • 2003 - 4
  • 2004 - 7
  • 2005 - 5
  • 2006 - 4
  • 2007 - 3
  • 2008 - 3
  • 2009 - 2
  • 2010 - 4
  • 2011 - 2
  • 2012 - 6
  • 2013 - 4
  • 2014 - 3
  • 2015 - 4
  • 2016 - 1 (so far)

So does the numbers back up my Logjam theory, in which people who hang on the list for years tend to go in sudden bursts? Well, yes and no. Obviously, everytime someone goes, others build up their number of appearances, so the culls never look as impressive in the stats as they might do otherwise. However, it is evident that the last two times the "always theres" got so high in number, law of averages brought on a spring cleaning from the Reaper soon after. So it is my current theory, based on precedent, that if nothing much happens in the next four months, at least a good half dozen will fall in 2017 from the list below.

  • 14 – Kirk Douglas,
  • 13 – Fidel Castro,
  • 12 – Jake Lamotta,
  • 10 – Zsa Zsa Gabor, Rev Billy Graham,
  • 9 – Olivia de Havilland,
  • 8- Vera Lynn, Fats Domino,
  • 5 – Joao Havelange, Herman Wouk, Henry Kissinger, Jerry Lewis, Ian Brady,
  • (potential 5s) – Sallis, Prince Philip, C James, Dole, Bush Sr, Norden,

And now, if you don't mind, I have a meeting to catch at Bibliogryphon's Listaholics Anonymous...

Mate the meetings aren't going to be able to deal with that. It is straight to the list Priory for you.

My main thought at the moment is that it's been really quiet for big name deaths since Muhammad Ali.

The period between Lemmy's death and Ali's death was one in which famous people died at a ferocious pace. There were so many famous people that died during that period, and only 6/50 on the official Deathlist? Pathetic.

Some really obvious picks have been left off lists in recent years (Sir Nicholas Winton, Howard Marks) - are the committee amateurs or something?

Can I choose who the official Deathlist should consist of next year?

I see 2 more dead by the end of the year and no record broken. Better luck in 2017.

Yeah, it's crap this year. Total shite.

It is two years ago todat that Lauren Baccall became the sixth hit for the 2014 Deathlist which went on to acheive a mediocre 10 deaths. The next death was 31 days later so we have until the middle of September to get ahead.

There is still some low hanging fruit on the list but I have gone a fortnight without a hit on my 1000 name Longlist so we do seem to be in a death drought. We might get a deluge before the end.

Some months ago it seemed we were in the Golden Age of Death. Then we found out the Reaper was simply doped.

At the risk of somebody complaining that this question is in the wrong place...

What's the significance of a person's position on the deathlist? I thought it was either random or determined by the number of votes they got when the list was being drawn up, but over on the football thread there's discussion on where to place various members of England's 1966 world cup team on next year's list. So what determines where any particular person goes?

The likelyhood to die I think. But the position after 15 are pretty messed up.

How is Zsa Zsa more likely to die than, let's say Herman Wouk. Wouldn't he be more likely to die now, because he is older?

I cannot answer your question, but as to the 1966 footballers, I suspect that people are making connections with their shirt numbers.

It is not a simple algorithm based on age alone, there is also a degree of celebrity and how long they spent publically circling the drain.

Only Grim and the Committee can confirm, but I've always assumed they were ranked 1-50 in the order the annual meeting deciding on them being on the list. For example, Martin Crowe was unanimously decided the first person that needed to go on the 2016 Deathlist so he is number one, then so on and so on. This works in my mind because I can well imagine them getting to say, 41, and thinking: "Right, we can use one more 2015 name, Norden or Kohl?" and a huge argument breaking out.

Mind you, there's been talk of how they play it so often I suspect it changes every so often. Tony Hart was in the last 52 names for 2009, there was individual voting/tallying up at one point, and one time, a name (I want to say Princess Margaret, but not sure) was agreed on at the meeting, only for them to forget to add her to the actual list and then she promptly snuffed it that year! Nicholas Winton was probably not on the list for the same deferential and rrespectful reasons many deadpoolers didn't have him on list.

Howard Marks was maybe a miss but not unforgivable

What sort of reasons would those be?

"Deferential and respectful reasons"?

A good pick is a good pick, being respectful has nothing to do with it. Putting someone on a deadpool is not about wanting a person to die, only about wanting to correctly predict that they will die.

I think they drink a lot and throw dice. Sounds like a perfectly acceptable strategy to me.

Do you truly think that they sit around scratching their bollocks in deep thought as to who they put on the lists??

Their conspicuous absence on here surely tells all and sundry that they have no great interest in DL beyond its cemented place in t'internet folklore.

What started out as an idea and became a, no, THE Worlds best DL forum in the whole universe has now become something that requires minimal input from them and a weekend of trawling the web for easy half dead picks once a year to replace those that have died on the previous years list.

Its not that serious.

No, the idea of it being taken super seriously amuses me. It's fairly obvious its not, and nor should it be.
