Jimmy Greaves

Recommended Posts

Anyone who was watching Best of Bad TV's live and dangerous episode tonight would have been able to see Jimmy Greave's take on weather forecasters (among some other classics such as that BBC News job interview as well as Tracy Emin at an arts debate).

The YouTube video for the one relevant to this thread is here;

Yes its Gilzean.

He spent decades away from the club and has only reappeared this year.

I think that may have something to do with Greaves condition and the 'life is too short' thing.

Second from the left is the welsh wizard Cliff Jones who at 82 looks very well indeed and having seen him on numerous ocassions WALKING up Bill Nicholson Way into the ground I can tell you he is very slight, about 5ft 5 and bloody brilliant.

As unassuming as they come, proper old school and loved by the supporters, long may he live.

Go on, enlighten me - Gilzean and Greaves had bad blood? Summat to do with Greaves eclipsing Gilzean by any chance?

I really dont know to be honest, there is an article by Greaves which is a bit matter of fact about their  relationship on and off the pitch.

Greaves considers Gilly to be the best player he ever played with but considers the losing touch with him as all part of life.

Maybe they were not the warm brotherly kind of folk that saw longevity in friendships?

Doesn't surprise me Greaves has bad blood with people. After what he did to Gazza.

Aye

Not that I'm that bothered where Spurs are concerned but I did idly Google some indication of where that photo above would sit in their all time greatest players and found some agreeable clickbait offering up a greatest ever starting XI plus bench - no sign of Gilzean, and Gary Lineker might struggle to get a run out given the game-changing talent that would start a game

Starting XI: Pat Jennings; Steve Perryman, Mike England, Ledley King, Cyril Knowles; Dave Mackay, Glenn Hoddle, Ossie Ardiles, Paul Gascoigne; Jimmy Greaves, Gareth Bale.

Substitutes: Hugo Lloris, Jurgen Klinsmann, Danny Blanchflower, Cliff Jones, Gary Mabbutt, Gary Lineker, David Ginola, Luka Modric

“Jim did brilliantly. He was able to say most of what he needed to say and the reverend helped him when he couldn’t.

Also, the whole marrying someone after living together 40 years. Back on the 2018 list, if he survives 2017, imo.

Here is an update on Jimmy Greaves, including a recent photo.

Yeah, he looks really well....

His missus is gripping his hand, he appears to have no ability to reciprocate.

A Spurs legend and a bit of a miserable old cunt, its all a bit tragic.

He looks like Skullion at the end of 'Porterhouse Blue'. Shame.

Perhaps it's just me, but this is a proper case of "re-marrying", i.e. marrying a person to whom you have been married before.

"Re-marry" sounds wrong to me when it describes someone marrying again after widowhood, or marrying a different person after a divorce.

TBF, David Crosby has looked close to death for a very long time.

Greavsie has some way to go yet.

The last thing I want to do is start a Greavsie vs Croz poll but...

TBF Croz has a new album and tour; a work schedule that would likely kill Greavsie these days.

Not a sperm gargling Gooner, are we?

Anyway, that's a tragic picture.

I know Greaves was a bit of an old cantankerous bastard but, Im sure, its not the way he would want to go, or summat.

Made a brief appearance in the new White Hart Lane doc (repeating a fair bit on BT Sport):

Quote

There is a moment of incalculable sadness in the new documentary film about White Hart Lane, which screens on Saturday night, when a desperately diminished Jimmy Greaves, now in a wheelchair and barely able to speak, is wheeled into the dressing room he graced for nine years.

His son suggests to him that he 'loved every minute' of his time at the ground, from 1961, and for just a moment the 77-year-old makes to describe those days. 'Yes,' Greaves says, brightening. Then the limitations he has faced since suffering a severe stoke last year kick in. 'Yes… I mean… yes.' And that is all he can offer.

Saint might enjoy the World Cup but Greaves looks unlikely to (even if still alive at that point), which is a complete turnaround from how it looked circa summer 2016.

It's a funny old game.
