Pedro67 232 Posted January 4, 2016 Wondering if any of you run sweeps/snow balls throughout the year based on dying celebs/famous I run a Deadball where I draw 1 celeb for every player on the 1st Jan. This year that was 76 friends/Colleagues/family and the charge is 30p per week ( £16 up front by end of Jan). So kitty builds by £22.80 per week till its won. 2 or more deaths in same week before Sunday Midnight Splits the Kitty. If your name dies, you get a replacement from my reserve list. The extra 40p's from 16 quid entry fee goes on a bonus for the seventh death. Biggest payout last year was £298 split when Warren Mitchell and Helmut Schmidt went in the same week. Just interested if anyone runs or is in something similar, and how differently it is done ?

Pedro67 232 Posted January 4, 2016 Put the list together myself. Try and make sure they are names known by most. As the majority of players are not really into dead pooling, and just treat it as a snowball, it keeps their interest when they know who they are. Only got one 'Who is Sandy Gall ? comment on its facebook group page.

Used to run one in my work. Over £50 per week was paid into a pool (kitty) I charged 50 p per week. There were some high prizes won. I think the highest was about £650. Not at all. You misunderstood Pedro's post. Obviously he knows who Sandy Gall is. It was one of his punters who didn't.

Deathray 2,941 Posted January 4, 2016 Isn't this against the law in Britain?
Pedro67 232 Posted January 4, 2016 Isn't this against the law in Britain? Not from what I researched 4 years back when I started it. It falls outside the realm of Casino gambling, and privately run sweepstakes, which is what it basically is, are permitted as long as no players attempt to influence the result. The papers here even supply sweepstake Kits sometimes for something, and there is no restriction on 'events'. Unless something's changed of course.

DevonDeathTrip 2,358 Posted January 4, 2016 Isn't this against the law in Britain? As Pedro says, not for sweepstakes, but you can't just walk in to William Hill and place a bet on Zsa-Zsa dying before the end of the year. However I *think* you can bet money on her living to the age of 100. Even with sweepstakes, if big money started changing hands, the authorities might take notice and alter the law accordingly. They wouldn't want another Taiwan situation, where residents of a town got a bit carried away and gambled a total of $30m on who would be next to die in their local hospital. Although death sweepstakes are legal, tontines remain illegal under the British Life Assurance Act 1774. Further tontine discussion on DL here and here.
