The world’s oldest spider, a subterranean trapdoor hunter, has died at the age of 43 after being subdued by a parasitic wasp, Australian scientists have reported.

Number 16, as the matriarch was known to researchers, outlived the previous Guinness world record holder – a pet tarantula in Mexico – by 15 years, thanks in large part to living her entire life in a single burrow.

Semo, the oldest known male bottlenose dolphin in the United States, has died at a Northern California theme park where he was a fan favorite.

Semo died Tuesday at age 54.  Semo apparently died of natural causes but a necropsy is planned. The average dolphin life span is 25 years in captivity and 12 years or more in the wild.

Semo came to the Vallejo park in 2012 from the Minnesota Zoo. Before that, Semo lived at SeaWorld in San Diego.  Nellie, the world's oldest captive dolphin, died at 61 in Florida's Marineland park in 2014.

Lots of good animals being all full of antics lately.

The owner of a privately run animal sanctuary in South Africa remains hospitalized Tuesday after a lion mauled him inside the facility.

Mike Hodge, a 67-year-old British man, can be seen in the footage trying to evade the animal at the Makarele Predator Centre in Thabazimbi, South Africa. He was rushed to the Mediclinic Hospital just three miles away from the park, where he remains in intensive care.

Three people are recovering from injuries after confusing young bobcats for domesticated kittens.  The injuries happened as the three were trying to feed the kittens after discovering them in a back alleyway.

After the victims began to suspect the creatures were wild, they contacted San Antonio Animal Care Services which confirmed they are indeed bobcats.

Zuberi, an 8-year-old giraffe, died unexpectedly Monday at Zoo Atlanta after getting part of its neck stuck in a metal railing.

The zoo announced the death Tuesday morning, saying Zuberi was in the behind-the-scenes giraffe complex when the accident happened. Workers were in the enclosure with him caring for another giraffe when it happened.  They saw some unusual movement in Zuberi's area and saw that he had a portion of his neck in a very small space in the metal railing.

A vicious swan attacked swimmers in a river as they competed in a triathlon.

"The swan and its partner is nesting on the river with two cygnets and I think he was warning the swimmers to stay away from his family.

I saw him go from one group of swimmers to another as the female swan and babies swam close by. It was tough for the swimmers."

No sadly, since DDP rules strictly prohibt the choosing of animals (in fact, if my memory serves me right, Harriet the Tortise was the prime example of who you couldn't pick).

Too bad too, since I was definetely surprised to hear that Koko the Sign Language Gorilla is still around... floating dangerously close to the average lifespan of a Gorilla too...

An octopus, who correctly predicted all of Japan's World Cup results, has been killed and turned into sashimi.  The mollusc, named Rabio, was hailed as psychic after an experiment in a paddling pool.

But Kimio Abe, the fisherman who caught Rabio, felt he'd make more money selling it for food than from its clairvoyance.

Anyone who thinks Octopi (or cats come to that [other thread]) can predict football results has consumed far too much of it or some other form of sushi and it's destroyed half their brain cells.

Rabio wasn't the first psychic octopus with an interest in international football competitions. In 2010, a German invertebrate named Paul correctly predicted six World Cup games.

... and that's where this should be, in the Paul The Octopus thread. ;)

Missouri wildlife officials are reporting a sad ending to a month-long effort to capture a wild turkey that had its own Facebook page with more than 4,000 followers.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports that the bird, which became known as Tina the urban turkey, was struck and killed Friday morning after wandering onto a Columbia road. Tina was known for approaching people and sometimes blocking traffic.

Damn...this is our zoo :(  Well one of.

Eight animals have now died after a jaguar escaped from its habitat at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans.

An alpaca and fox died Sunday, the day after the male jaguar killed four alpacas, one emu and one fox Saturday morning. The jaguar was captured and returned to its night house after being sedated by a vet team.  No people were hurt and the zoo was reopened Sunday.

Attached is a photo of that EXACT jaguar inside his habitat.  I take extra pics cuz it’s one of my daughter’s favourite animals.
