Political Frailty

Recommended Posts

Heard Geoffrey Howe on Radio 4's Today programme this morning, talking about the economic crisis.

I must say, he sounded a bit frail, in a sort of Enoch Powell on his last legs sort of way.

If you could imagine his (once) familiar dulcet tones, but several semitones higher...

One to watch...

I believe he was the oldest former leader of a country, still living.

Does anybody know who is it now. (Maybe the ex-president of Senegal or Suriname)

Had Gabriel París Gordillo lived another month and a half, it would have been him. The oldest living former head of state is now Johan Ferrier of Suriname, with Mamadou Dia of Senegal not far behind. These lists may be of some interest to you.

Apperently Nguyen Ngoc Tho, first prime minister of Vietnam was forgotten. He became 100 in May.

It's unknown whether he's alive or not. The article states he was last known to be alive in 1992.

V.P. Singh, the former prime minister of India is dead at the age of 77. :banghead:

A very nice Thanksgiving day surprise.

So that's what thanksgiving is about? Being thankful that someone has died? At the best of times I despise the word nice. Here I just find it wholly inappropriate.

Thanksgiving is about valuing what you have. I do not value the death of others but I observe it. I admit that I'm obsessed with what is happening in the world. I don't know exactly why I have this habit of scrolling through headlines of which many would consider morbid.

It might involve the fact that I perceive the concept of this place in a different light then others. I'm generally not affected by much of which is contributed here. I guess it keeps my mind off things because it's always happening.

Emperor Akihito of Japan has cancelled his duties for the third straight day. Akihito was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat approximately two weeks ago and was hospitalized after experiencing chest pains. He appears to be in stable condition but doctors are already saying that he is at risk of developing osteoporosis. The Emperor might be one to watch in the future.

Hopefully he'll survive longer than a couple of weeks at least

Just heard on the news that the cancer is in multiple organs, he could go quickly or it could be drawn out over the course of the year depending on how he responds to treatment

Ramaswamy Venkataraman, 98, the former President of India, has been hospitalised (for that's how it is spelt in my 1948 dictionary, when and why did we make the etymological leap to hospitalized?? I suppose I should move with ye tymes) with dehydration.

Brits spell "hospitalised" with an "s", Americans use a "z". Given the article was in the Hindu, the so-called "National Newspaper", perhaps we can presume this is India throwing off further shackles of the Empire. Ungrateful sods.

That's caused by the British Government being stuck in it for the last six months I'd imagine...

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who is 76, is to undergo heart bypass surgery for the second time over the weekend. Could be a unique hit on the DDP for 'Death-Defying' if things get messy.

Indian PM's heart bypass operation successful, say doctors
