Comped 530 Posted February 20 NZ Green MP Efeso Collins dead at the age of 49 after collapsing at a local fun run in Auckland, per New Zealand Herald. He is the first MP in NZ to die in office in 11 years, and apparently only made his maiden speech last week. Likely a heart issue as EMTs used defibrillators but could not revive him, but that remains unconfirmed.

About to be an ex-MP? Possibly, but I wouldn't be completely certain that Labour pick it up. It's a very White Working Class seat with a strong military background. It's difficult to say with Mercer as he's quite divisive, but possible he gets a better than average incumbency bonus. I can see a scenario where Labour get a majority of say 40/50 and this seat just about holds on for the Tories, whereas less marginal targets may perish. It all depends on where you think Labour's swing is going to come from, is it likely to be greater or lesser in amongst demographic groups which have been trending away from them since at least 2010? Might well be big enough swing to make the distinction a moot one in Mercer's case but it is dangerous to call an election this far out (2017 anyone?).
