Former Scottish Secretary David Duguid deselected by the Tory Party for the forthcoming election: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c977x2ldv7eo

He's in the hospital following a period of ill health. One to watch?

From a mate: “He’s very very unwell. Potentially not at death’s door but would take him years to recover in order to be able to do the job again.”

Doesn’t know the specific condition but knows that the recovery time is very long.

Whilst I’m here I’ll add that SNP minister Richard Lochhead is very ill. Complications of surgery.

He's been recovering since the middle of last month from this surgery if the BBC is to be believed?

Looks like if anyone was banking on Fico's assassination attempt leading to some kind of moral changing of the guard, those hopes are now sadly dashed:

They can also request a leave of absence if they have a legitimate excuse for non-attendance. Lord Leith (Labour) b. 1947 ms 2004 did this just a few days ago to avoid getting thrown out.

The list may be indicative of illness, or merely just members being busy elsewhere in their lives or disillusioned with the House. However, 18 out of 28 of them are 80+ so worth keeping an eye on.

FFS. If you were to come up with a list of ways to make the Lords even worse than the status quo, I’d suggest do this. Labour, as usual, haven’t a clue. They’re just stabbing around in the dark and putting anything together on a fag packet that sounds like it could be mildly enticing to voters cos they essentially don’t really care as power is already assured for them.

They wanted to put something in the manifesto as the lords can’t block anything in the manifesto in practise.

I suspect through the Lords like always will hesitate when debating it’s own reforms.

Jan Reehorst (Wiki), Dutch politician dead at 101

Ton van Baars (1922) (CDA, 1980-1981; 1982-1986) seems to be the oldest living former member of the House of Representatives. While political databases state him to be alive, I can't really find any recent sources supporting this.

Reehorst (PvdA, 1956-1967) was the last living representative who was in office during the cabinets of Wim Drees, who was a member of the PvdA as well.

According to my research, the five earliest surviving Dutch representatives all came into office following the 1967 national elections or shortly thereafter:

Elected at the Dutch elections of 1967:

Nico Verlaan (1932) Boerenpartij: 1967-1971; independent: 1971

Minne Dijkstra (1937) D66: 1967-1972
Anneke Goudsmit (1933) D66: 1967-1974
Erwin Nypels (1933) D66: 1967-1972; 1974-1982; 1982-1989

First became a representative after the formation of the new cabinet De Jong:

Hans Wiegel (1941) VVD: 1967-1971; 1971-1977; 1981-1982

I bet the age cap never actually comes in the exact way it is proposed . It feels like one of things that gets in a manifesto but changes or is scrapped before it is actually introduced.

I'd kick out all the "lords" ennobled by the last Tory government.

There, problem solved.

On the four left:

W. Michael Blumenthal is a long term smoker. He was known for his trademark Jamaican cigars. Well enough to comment on something this summer, but also 96.

Ray Marshall - no idea. Can't find anything recent.

Joseph A. Califano Jr. - Also no idea, as far as I know hasn't given any interviews this year but he was widowed in January and is 91.

Neil Goldschmidt had a stroke ten years ago. Also suffers from a-fib and other heart problems

Neil Goldschmidt, former Oregon Governor and Secretary for Transportation under Carter, reportedly dead: https://www.oregonlive.com/politics/2024/06/neil-goldschmidt-former-governor-forever-tainted-by-scandal-dies.html

The question is can he outlive them all?

Blumenthal is 98, Marshall almost 96, and Califano is 93. It would be absolutely astounding if he managed it, but it’s within the realm of possibility.
