Political Frailty

Recommended Posts

Seems to be a bad day for financiers. The ex head of Goldman Sachs and deputy secretary of state John Whitehead has died at 92 http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/02/07/us-goldman-whitehead-idUSKBN0LB0NU20150207John

Was he a politician because this is a political thread?

gcreptile beat you to it by the way and that's the second time this weekend he's had his thunder stolen.

So why did you start by calling him a financier and posting it in a political thread and then call him a politician? Why not call him a politician first and post it in this thread?

A report by the imperialist Yankee wankers? :D :D

Aye, jog on.

To be fair, you just say that for everything involving the US.... that doesnt mean its necessarily false does it

If it's true I don't really see what the point of this info is other than to suggest "he's a weirdo!"

Probs best to post this in the political thread until the evidence emerges that it belongs with Sir Jimmy and his mates but...

News reports are making it clear that Sir Leon was buried in an unmarked grave. So, do his family, like, know something that would eventually make his grave a target for vandals and the like?

Or worse, necrophiliacs?

We have a list (somewhere) of living Thatcher government types. I was wondering who was still around from governments before Thatcher. Which was the genesis of this small list.

Surviving members of the UK government from 1951-79. There's a lot of crossover between them, so I just listed them under their PM, with their year of birth and notable jobs for ease of access.

Best job title so far is "Comptroller of the Household", which sounds made up, but is apparently an important government dogsbody role.

I won't quote because it will take up too much room but I presume the John Smith (Scottish minister) is a different one to the one who went on to lead the labour party?

Yes, the labour party bloke has been dead since 1994. John Smith, Baron Kirkhill, is still breating.

Hein

Yeah, he died and let in the Blair.

Lord Kirkhill earned £52k in 2014 just for existing. Nice work if you can get it!

Work? I don't think so.

How does one get such a sinecure? I know a few applications of that kind of income.

A list of Lords from The Lord of Lists

The following 20 peers are the oldest of those who have been given extended leave of absence from their duties in the Lords. It is possible that such leave is granted for other reasons such as holding a UN or EU political appointed post but considering the youngest of these will be 87 this year I imagine most of them are ill or frail, and remember there are many older people than this still active in the Upper House.

  • Michael Sandberg (b.1927)
  • John (J D) Sainsbury (b.1927)
  • Gwilym prys Prys-Davies (b.1923)
  • Jim Prior (b.1927)
  • Beryl Platt (b.1923)
  • Olive Nicol (b.1923)
  • James Molyneaux (b.1920)
  • Roy Mason (b.1924)
  • George Mackie (b.1919)
  • Betty Lockwood (b.1924)
  • Philip Knights (b.1920)
  • William Griffiths (b.1923)
  • Robert Goff (b.1926)
  • Robert Lindsay (b.1927)
  • Alun Gwynne-Jones (b.1919)
  • Asa Briggs (b.1921)
  • Thomas Bridges (b.1927)
  • Derek Barber (b.1918)
  • Ian Paisley (b.1926)
  • Richard Attenborough (b.1923)
There should be an obit for any of these.

Third hit from this list from last August with Beryl Platt dying.

you missed out Philip Knights who died in December. you must keep up ! :smileyd:

Thank you - whoever you are. I struggle to pay attention during the festive season.

5 have gone now. http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-31513192 Quarter of your list have died in just 6 months 1

At this rate, Jim Prior'll be a decent bet for the 2016 list if hes still alive.
