Agreed that a lot of them have been dropping off recently.

Thought I'd take this opportunity to look at how many WWII veterans from the three strands of government in the U.S. are still with us.

There are still 23 living formers members of the House of Representatives who served:

b. 1919: Lester L. Wolff
b. 1920: Neal Edward Smith
b. 1921: Mike McCormack
b. 1923: Bob Dole, Al Quie
b. 1924: Frank Joseph Guarini, Howard C. Nielson, Weston E. Vivian
b. 1925: Fletcher Thompson, G. William Whitehurst, Lucien Nedzi
b. 1926: J. Roy Rowland, Elwood Hillis, Earl Hutto, Mark Andrews, Robert J. Lagomarsino
b. 1927: Benjamin B. Blackburn, Arthur Ravenel, Jr., William J. Keating, Austin Murphy, Bud Brown, Edwin Edwards, Jim Weaver, James W. Symington

There are just 5 living Senators who served (they are also the top 5 oldest living):
b. 1923: James Buckley, Bob Dole (also listed above)
b. 1925: Daniel Evans
b. 1926: Mark Andrews (also listed above)
b. 1927: John Warner

There are 14 living Governors who served:
b. 1921: John Malcolm Patterson
b. 1922: Wayne Mixson
b. 1923: William Winter, Al Quie (also listed above), Linwood Holton
b. 1924: Dale E. Wolf, Jimmy Carter
b. 1925: Ted Schwinden, Daniel Evans (also listed above)
b. 1926: George Ariyoshi
b. 1927: Phil Batt, George Nigh, Winfield Dunn, Edwin Edwards (also listed above)

Jimmy Carter (also listed above) is of course the only living President who served. There are no living Vice Presidents who served.

6 living members of the Cabinet who served:

Johnson administration: Alan Stephenson Boyd (b. 1922), Ramsey Clark (b. 1927)
Nixon administration: Henry Kissinger (b. 1923), George Shultz (b. 1920)
Ford administration: Henry Kissinger (b. 1923, also listed above)
Carter administration: Charles Duncan (b. 1926), Ray Marshall (b. 1928)
Reagan administration: George Shultz (b. 1920, also listed above)

No living justices of the Supreme Court who served following the death of John Paul Stevens (1920–2019).

As far as I know, these are complete. I will do the UK (Commons and Lords) when I get time, but that will probably involve more research.

Howard C. Nielson, 95, Member of the House of Representatives for Utah (1983–1991) died this morning according to a tweet from his granddaughter.

This may have already been mentioned here but we now have a few more dead parliaments.

Following the death of James Ramsden on 29 March 2020 the initial parliament of 1951-1955 is dead as the sole survivor of the entire parliament. John Eden (born 1925), was not elected until a by-election 1954. Not including Eden, Robert Lindsay (b.1927) and Tom Mitchell* (b.1931) are the only survivors of the 1955-59 parliaments although Tom Mitchell was an Irish nat whose elections were overturned.

The 1935,1945 and 1950-1951 parliaments are all entirely dead.

If either Eden or Lindsay die, we’ll know about it straight away. Mitchell last made a public appearance at a funeral of a former IRA grandee in ‘06. He’s listed on the UK Parliament’s former members list as being alive but if he died off radar it wouldn’t surprise me.

Certainly wouldn't surprised if he had either, not to mention he's not technically a former MP.

Death Notice for former Tory MP for Bournemouth West, John Eden, aged 94: http://announcements.telegraph.co.uk/deaths/242040/eden

Another 90+ aged former MP not picked this year for the DDP. I'd guess he's a List of The Missed possibly.

Edit: Yep picked as long ago as 2008, who knows if earlier: http://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2008/celebs_E.html#edenjo

Wow wasn't he mentioned on here only very recently in a discussion if his death would get a mention in the media and a qualifying obituary?

Will the two living ex-MPs who have a 100th birthday scheduled for this year Sir Patrick Duffy (17 June) and Michael Shaw (9 October) make it to the century line?

Statistically the likelihood of 3 MPs being 100 or over (inc Ronald Atkins)  at any one time or for any single MP to reach 100  is so low that one of them  must surely die before October 9. Therefore either Michael Shaw or Patrick Duffy will almost certainly die before their 100th birthday.Obviously as there is a lot longer before Shaws birthday he is most likely to die before he reaches 100. I predict Michael Shaw will die before the end of summer. Ronald Atkins and Patrick Duffy will probably follow not long after!

Literally further up this page on the 24th May 2020. He died on the 23rd May.

As discussed there that now leaves the 1951-55 parliament as a 'dead parliament'. Were 2 away from the 1959-63 parliament becoming a 'dead parliament' with Tom Mitchell and Robert Lindsay although the former of those two is not technically a former MP as he was disqualified and had his election overturned so could only be 1 away. Someone fire off an email to the Torygraph or the Graniuad please, they like this rubbish for obits....

Sounds a fairly sudden death going this (Conor Burns resigned as a minster a few weeks ago after getting a week's suspension from the commons.)

It's worth noting that although no sitting Conservative MP has died in office for the past 15 years (and only one in 20 years), the few MPs who get to the century are mostly Labour MPs - Hazell, Atkins and possibly Duffy. A lot of former Conservative MPs seem to die in the 90-95 age bracket.

Perhaps being left wing or socialist is kinder on the body and soul....less damaging?!

Just from a feeling I get from recording the deaths of MPS over the last three years rather than statistically, Labour MPs tend to die younger, Tories tend to get to mid-eighties and early nineties. There are the exceptions, obviously, but Tories dying in their 70s is very much the exception, Labour MPs dying in their late 80s or above very much the exception.

Yeah, there's a spate of Labour MPs dying in their 50s-70s, mostly from working class vices (nae exercise, too much booze and fags, crap diet).

I think that will change as Labour mp's becomes less likely to have worked in industrial jobs and it's lifestyle.

Just use my list on page 127, should be quicker.

With Atkins' birthday fast approaching, House Willz has a new motto - Update Is Coming.

I'm currently running a re-do on the surviving over 70s list. Up to 1983. (As I know you went bonkers at the 70-75 lot.)

Although with the amount of died 2020 dates I've found half the list'll be dead by time I'm done.

Alas, not, as you know any list of mine is ludicrously long and stupid.

Right, here we go, every single Labour MP who has died since John Smith's death in 1994. As that gives a quarter century and is a famous premature death to kick things off from. I started by adding causes of death but after I realised how many fucking names this way I gave up on that bit...

Fucking hell.

Anyhow, I think this proves you both right in a way - yes, the average is 82 and theres lots of long lived Labour MPs, but there's also a staggering number of "dead before 75" names on there. Also, I'm pretty sure the Tories tend to die in their 80s and 90s more often but given Thatcher spawned several million of those I'm not checking!

Gosh respect for your dedication and detailed effort!

Is there any discernible patterns with liberal, northern Ireland mps and the SNP?
