Must have lost half of his weight...

Interesting that AP have decided to do a timeline on Dennis Hastert now: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/ap/article-9995545/Timeline-events-Dennis-Hastert-s-life-career.html

Apparently there was an out-of-court settlement yesterday regarding the assault allegations.

Ok, said I'd take a look at this and it's not a perfect list by any means but here are the surviving heads of state and government from the Cold War (12 March 1947 – 26 December 1991).

I've stuck to the main participants of the Cold War as defined on this Wiki page (i.e. the Eastern and Western Blocs), as opposed to spreading this too thinly and covering every single country who played a role in an event(s) of the period.

Western Bloc

Australia
Elizabeth II (b. 1926)
Paul Keating (b. 1944)

Belgium

-------------------
It seems like a long list, but it's really not when you consider that 95% of Cold War leaders are dead.

Romania, West Germany, Turkey, the Philippines and Iraq are the only countries with no survivors. The USA to be the next?

41 names remaining.

Thursday, September 15th:

PARIS (AFP) - Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who has been hospitalised in Paris for over a fortnight, "likely" has stomach cancer, a leading French doctor said based on a description of his symptons.

"It is very hard to make a diagnosis. If it is true that he first suffered gastrointestinal blood loss, then it is likely to be stomach cancer," Bernard Debre, head of the urology department at Paris's Cochin hospital, siad Thursday.

"I say likely, because I cannot see what else it could be," the doctor, who did not personally examine Bouteflika, told France Inter radio.

The 68-year-old Algerian leader was operated for a "bleeding stomach ulcer", according to a medical statement issued on December 5 -- the only official information about his condition since he was hospitalised on November 26.

Algerian officials have since said Bouteflika was recovering normally in hospital, but there has been worried speculation that his condition may be more serious than publicly admitted.

It's over. It's finally over.

Bouteflika was both the earliest UN General Assembly President (1974) and the earliest Minister of Foreign Affairs of Algeria (1963-1979)

The earliest UN General Assembly President is now Tanzania's Salim Ahmed Salim (1942-, in 1979) with the second-earliest being Guyana's Rudy Insanally (1936-, 1993)

Diplomat Rudy Insanally and the trouble spots on his head

Earliest Algerian Foreign Affairs Minister is now Dr. Ahmed Taleb Ibrahimi (1932-, 1982-1988) and the second-earliest being Sid Ahmed Ghozali (1937-, 1989-1991)

Other news that I'll just edit here:

Two-time Paraguay-USA ambassador (2005-2012 and 2015-2020) Carlos Giannelli dead at 73 from heart attack...

Polish longtime politician and trade unionist Alfred Miodowicz dead at 92...

Japanese house of representatives member Wataru Takeshita is no more due to esophageal cancer. He was 74...

Howard Quayle, 54-year old Isle of Man Chief Minister has had a stroke...

New pictures of 93-year old Estonian politician Arnold Ruutel. He looks great, can still stand.

Jussi Halla-aho, 50-year old Finnish populist politician known from a racist blog and always looking unwell has been on a sick leave from the parliament for a month.

Also, Amrullah Saleh's (Panjshir resistance President) uncle has been executed by Taliban.

Out of North America's heads of state in 2010, only three out of the seven (three out of eight if you count the Sahrawi ADR) are still alive. These are Morocco's king who sometimes has heart surgeries, Sudan's Omar al-Bashir who will soon be sent to the Hague and Mauritania's corruption-charged Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz who was wounded in an assasination attempt in 2012.

Madison Cawthorne, the young Republican congressman of Generation Trump in a wheelchair, has been battling significant health issues lately:

It's not Covid, but directly related to the accident that put him in a wheelchair.

Accused of sexual assault by multiple of his classmates and people who were in the same college. I'm not praying for the guy.

In other news, Filipino politician Dinky Soliman has died:

https://www.rappler.com/nation/former-dswd-secretary-dinky-soliman-dies

Cause of death was heart failure and renal failure complications, had covid last month and already looked frail and slim in June in Benigno Aquino III's funeral. She was 68.

Lots of deaths from the Philippines lately...nonagenarians Imelda Marcos (frail and in a wheelchair for years, "atleast seven ailments" in 2019), Cesar Virata (last living prime minister whose tenure was during the Marcos dictatorship, stroke+covid+pneumonia in April 2020), Fidel Ramos (has lost weight recently and sometimes does not attend events due to poor health, however in good health compared to the two above) and of course Juan Ponce Enrile (will never die, 98 next year and hopes that he will reach 110) are all still living but for how long?

Seems to be an epic humour fail going on here amongst some of our more pedantic users.

I'm not bothered about another tiresome debate about politics or harassment allegations folks. I was just making a jestful and shallow comment on the aesthetics of the man. For the love of god, lighten up some of you.

President of European Parliament David Sassoli hospitalised with non-COVID pneumonia.

Rumours around he is suffering from some serious illness lately.

If Sassoli died now, he would be outlived by 10 of his predecessors all older than him. Sassoli is 65, not exactly young either but there are three octogenarian former European Parliament Presidents (Jerzy Buzek aged 81, Klaus Hänsch aged 82 and José María Gil-Robles aged 86) and one nonagenarian (Henry Plumb, Baron Plumb aged 96. Only Briton to ever hold this post)
