Following his retirement as MP, he was made a life peer and served until retirement in August of this year. He served in Kinnock’s Shadow Cabinet taking on the Education and Science portfolio from 1983-1987.

One of the more recognisable backbenchers in the 90s. I keep picking the wrong MPs on the DDP! Radice retired abruptly recently so was probably on folks radar.

Certainly contemptuous of the working classes he claimed to represent, but then long standing voting for anything with a red ribbon on his lapel will do that.  Probably more centre right than most of his contemporaries. How an unlikeable sort like that got voted in time and again, who knows?

Tadeusz Ferenc, mayor of Rzeszów, Poland from 2002 to 2021, has died at 82 (link in Polish).

 

Ferenc oversaw the development of Rzeszów, capital of the Subcarpathian province, from a small regional center into a rapidly developing metropolis; Rzeszów is one of the fastest growing cities in a country where most cities are losing population or stagnant.

 

Ferenc was a member of the Democratic Left Alliance and it was practically a miracle that he remained in power for so long in Poland's most conservative province. His leadership proved popular enough that he was succeeded by a fellow leftist.

Parliament is full of unlikeable people of dubious motivations and probably always was.

Some of these went on to have ministerial careers such as Richard Caborn and other are already on the radar like Ian Paisley but assembling a DDP team from this lot would be a leap of faith as many will be tocuh and go for an Obit. However if you have spies in the local press then this could be a good source of information.

 

The 1979 elections were held on the First past the post principal with constituencys being roughly approximated to counties it is only in later elections that we get the regional approach and a move to the D'Hondt system.

Updated @Bibliogryphon's neglected list  (sorry ) of Britain's first set of elected MEPs for the death of Anthony Simpson (wiki), a Conservative MEP (1979–1994) who has died aged 86. 

He was probably the most obscure name on the above list, meaning that they all have a good chance of getting a Times or Telegraph death notice at the very least.

This lot don't seem like they're in a rush to die. 17/53 of them gone in 8 years despite the mean age being high.

Started reading that years ago and never finished it. Unusual for me and political memoirs. Will return to it one day. No spoilers though, can't wait to see if Scotland becomes independent or not at the end of the book!

Latest on this:

I guess it'll be postponed again a few times until Strougal dies.

They've finally gotten the expert opinions:

 

Lubomir Strougal, 97, only suffers from "mild dementia" but can't understand the criminal proceedings. can only understand the meaning of criminal proceedings in a very general, formal and imprecise way, and only at a certain time of day and in the calm of the home environment.

Jan Fojtík, 94, suffers from senile dementia and is in even worse condition than Strougal.

Vratislav Vajnar, 91, suffers from a mild cognitive impairment, but well enough to be prosecuted.

Doesn't sound serious though.

Finnish President 2000-2012 Tarja Halonen undegoes hip replacement surgery. Saw her on tv a couple of months ago and to me she looked quite frail.

Has a small health history: bipolar disorder with mania periods, thyroid cancer 2011 (possibly misdiagnosed) that lead into the removal of her thyroid gland, head injury in 2012 and subdural hematoma in 2013. 

Added to Kirchner's medical woes itemised previously, she's escaped an attempted assassination as the would-be assassin's gun jammed.
