Only Famous For Being Ill And Dying

Recommended Posts

Cancer blogger and DDP pick Reice Reilly died on July 20th according to his facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/patientZero1996

He was supposedly a cancer blogger under the name "Patient Zero" but never "really" blogged, as far as I can tell.

Anyway, no obits as far as I can see. He was one of two obit chances for my main team List-of-the-Lost-er Pete Felton, since they knew each other in hospital. Reice Reilly had mirror coverage...so there was a small chance...

This leaves the Birmingham Music Awards in November as the only remaining QO chance.

Since FFBI are now gone from the DDP, might as well mention the case where Sarah Harding gets a message from a cancer mum who got a similar diagnosis

Haha. Sounds like the sort of threat modern parents use when their kids refuse to finish their dinner. 'If you don't eat all your vegetables, Facebook will ban you from updating your account'.

Okay, I'm going through my "100% chance of dying people" on the longlist....

...Lewis Sewell, upcoming theatre actor, sadly died in late August at age 18:

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-leicestershire-54286728

...Pete Huckle, a chef with BBC local coverage already died in 2019 - but only his mother's blog tells about it in 2020:

http://robertahuckle.com/projects.html

... Marc Humphries, cancer dad who played cricket, dead in August:

Glasgow cancer woman Ashley Meehan already died in late 2019:

Howell Phillips...popular teacher in Plymouth died on October 1st:

An honorable member of the FFBI club if such a person could ever exist - Simon Dobbin, Cambridge United fan assaulted by Southend fans and left with serious brain and body damage,  has died. Notable he got BBC coverage on main sports news page.

Noel Conway is sad that he doesn't live in New Zealand anymore, where he now could get euthanized:

That is not entirely true as I believe the NZ policy only applies if you have 6 months or less to live which does not apply to him.

For whatever reason, the Birmingham Mail picked up the story of Pete Felton and his lonely widow up again...

Too bad the Mirror doesn't follow...

...Anyway that last obit chance, the Birmingham Music awards, was supposed to take place on Nov 15th but has been delayed again to Dec 5th. And it's going to be completely online.

Also, as the article mentions, there'll be another edition of PeteFest, a music festival in his honor, on Nov 28th...

And that's probably all she wrote for the 2020 DDP.

One of the weirder "deciding hits" we've had. Obit 9 months after death, quite possibly in relation to the "lockdown isolation" of his widow.

(Obviously decisive only under normal further developments)

Decent thread this, mind...much of the talent snagging local paper obits and the like

Oh aye, and...Deathrace entries are open now

Wouldn’t have been a hit at all in 2019; follow the bouncing ball for your 2021 rules and QO sources.

And ‘getting a mention’ is NOT an obit.  Let’s be clear.  But like the rest of your milquetoast personal constitutions, we know why it is what it is. Firm decisions shouldn’t be left to the infirm that infest DL.  All y’all know fuck well what ‘an obit’ is.  The person should be named in it at the very least ffs.
As you were...

Yes, Felton would have counted in 2019. He almost certainly wouldn't in 2021 unless I've missed some actual albums or chart success or what not.

The DDP rules since time foretold have stated it needs "the mention of death", not a full obit.

Kindly fuck off with these incessant complaints that always arise from not reading the fucking rules, old chap.

Good.  He was a nobody with a sob story latched on to by various Phil Space hacks.

The DDP has been degraded by the inclusion of this type of pick.  If this decides the winner, it's an abomination.

Well, in the end Pete Felton is just as important to the team as, say, Alex Trebek, or David Hagen. It's the timing that puts the focus on him now.

In terms of fame, well, he was apparently well-known in Birmingham as a street singer, or busker as they are apparently called.

He also released an EP on iTunes, as many up-and-coming artists do today:

https://music.apple.com/us/album/the-road-less-travelled-ep/1424547565

He had an appearance on a BBC casting show, was in fact, invited to it, possibly because of his local notability.

He was well-known enough that there is a music festival PeteFest in his name, and he gave his name to a street music award at the Birmingham Music awards:

https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=206015500641057

I think there is some local notability (fame is stretching it too far though), and his musical output is the same as 2019 DDP pick Billy Clayton. But Pete didn't tweet as often.

Clayton had his very media active mother to make him further known. Felton had his wife.

It would have been more elegant had the QO come through himself, not through his widow's sob story. That is indeed a little disappointing.

I definitely considered Felton briefly cause he seemed to be the Billy Clayton of 2020 at first glance, but disregarded him cause wasn’t sure if they would follow up on him. So this is not bad faith pick of Reptile. Definitely am disappointed that it’s only through the FFBI angle. Hopefully when Petefest/Birmingham Music Awards come he gets a bit of a more proper obit...

Would this have happened if he hadn't got terminally ill at a young age, though?

Probably not. But when one reads through this thread, well, there is no Lisa Magill cancer blogging-award.

Pete Felton at least had something to work with.
