Only on threads created after the downgrade upgrade. I don't know why they cant get this guy to sort it out.

The public are in favour of changing legislation to allow him to, but the conservatives think it might *god forbid* be used by other parliamentarians as an opportunity to allow female emperors and so are unlikely to change the legislation.

From our point of view is his abdication actually likely to prolong his life in the same way as its seems to have for Pope Benedict XVI?

This is why the Japanese government agreed to the abdication in...2019? They're hoping natural events will prevent them needing to create a precedent by then!

This is why I think he's a good pick. He clearly got health issues, and the government is probably expecting him to die before he's able to abdicate.

Official abdication announcement expected to have been brought forward to next month, instead of next summer.
