Here is an interesting stat
....

It wasn't all bad for DDP top 50 selections going 1-3  as Daisy Berkowitz and Chuck Berry finished in the 41-50 range on DDP while neither made the Crowdsource or Deathlist 50.

If you are saying Daisy Berkowitz was in the top 50 in DDP last year I find that absolutely stunning.  Extremely shocking.   Highly questionable.
I'd be far more inclined to believe he was one of the top 5 'most dropped names from 2016 to 2017'.

Bottom name in the Drop 40 - Val Kilmer - was picked by 39 teams in 2017. Daisy Berkowitz by 36 teams. Almost certainly in the top 50. Lots of people going "well, this must be the year" or, like Gcreptile, using the stats for that type of cancer to make an educated guess.

So here's a headline about a mum that died TWELVE MINUTES into the new year.
Got me to thinking....this being the stats thread...anyone recall a person who was an extremely early 'first hit' on Jan 1?

I forget the exact time, but on January 1st 2013, I dozed off about the usual time (3am after "new Deathlist chat", real life stuff, etc), I'm pretty sure I woke up around 10am, and Octopus of Odstock's DDP joker had already died in the intervening 7 hours! And it wasn't a Famous for Dying person too, it was a sports commentator (ok, on cricket but cricket is huge with English folk) and he'd seen some "CMJ is nearing the end" tweets at Christmas.

I dunno if I'm misremembering, but I'm almost sure there was a "first death of the millennium" about three minutes into 2000. Some journalist who died in an accident covering the Y2K celebrations... seem to remember he was Egyptian or Moroccan or Algerian?

I had a 'hit' three years ago with guitarist Jeff Golub (who was almost a last second cut), which was being announced by early afternoon.  But I like the Octopus of Odstock story, and would expect nothing else from OoO.

I think the earliest miss is still me with Helen Suzman. Dropped from team December 31st 2008, died January 1st 2009.

Ah, that explains why I went to look for her as a hit in 2009 yesterday and didn't find her. Harsh luck.

  Average Age Deaths
2016 87.66 12
2017 87.38 17

For those of you -- and let' s be honest, it's every single one of us -- preparing to enter an All-Oregon DDP team next year, here are the stats for the leading causes of death in Oregon as compiled for 2016.
SC

Spoiler alert:
("The top causes of death in Oregon are compiled from death certificates filed in the Oregon Vital Records office, known as the Center for Health Statistics.Hedberg said the latest data available is from 2016, as officials only have preliminary data for 2017")

Ms. Winters was given very serious DDP consideration by another odd fellow a couple weeks ago, but Ms. Ruth Samuelson soured me on taking state representatives (thus, Ms. Mazie Hirono probably a poor pick as well).  Until I see one of the aforementioned duo receive a QO, I think I'll stick by the rule to avoid such names.
As for Mr. Winn -- his name says it all!  GL with that pick GCR.

Edit: I learned about 20 years ago, as I drove through the state the only time I would ever cross it's borders, that denizens pronounce the name of the state 'Or-eh-ginn'.  As opposed to 'gahn' or 'gun', which I think everyone outside of OreGINN says.
As for the residents, I believe (but may be corrected) that it is pronounced 'Or-e-GO-nians', long O.

Hey, I'm a Michigander...what do you expect?

Hirono will definitely obit since she's a member of the US Senate rather than a state senate. Big difference there.

Ah yes of course.  Getting my wires crossed.  You are correct her obit is already written waiting to publish (maybe too early by accident).
I noticed she was at a high level of activity on Worshington the past couple weeks, complaining about this and that as a good Democrat should be doing I reckon.  Perhaps it was that which led me to strike her name in the end (she was one of my last 10 DDP cuts, but I used her in my own home league DP as my 20th name...I can't use all the obtuse names like here).  Pancreatic can knock someone down inside of a month of course so maybe I will regret that decision, like so many come December lol.

So I'm not entirely sure if I should start a separate thread for this or not, but I am interested in figuring out what is the best potential 100% common knowledge team out there, and I want to try and see how the more popular hits start to shift. So this is what I have so far (most of these names down below aren't dead yet, I only put them in there to try to make it look neater with a full team instead of two names, so those are highlighted in orange for names I think could die in 2018, but they probably won't all be dead in 2018 (Goodwin might not obit either)). So here's what it looks like so far:

  1. Leah Bracknell
  2. Patrick Cryne
  3. Rayya Elias (joker at the moment)
  4. Dean Francis
  5. Greg Gilbert
  6. Vanessa Goodwin
  7. Clive James
  8. Tessa Jowell
  9. Devin Lima
  10. Peter Lorimer
  11. John McCain
  12. Liam Miller
  13. Olivia Newton-John
  14. Fernando Ricksen
  15. Nobby Stiles
  16. Stefan Karl Stefansson
  17. Bernard Tapie
  18. Morgan Tsvangirai
  19. Marieke Vervoort
  20. Bobby Zarin

If you do want a thread for this, say so and I will do it. Otherwise, I'll post this in the statistics thread monthly to see how this evolves...

Here's the active member stats, which I found surprisingly high, but I suppose there is a hardcore of about 20-30 of us who contribute the vast majority of posts.

So, about 1 month from the beginning of the year, I have unhighlighted Patrick Cryne back to black, as well as adding Jessica Falkholt in place of Tapie (I just chose to remove a random 7 pointer) as I slowly evolve this into a team that you could've made with 20. I'm not sure if Falkholt will be in the final 20 at the end of the year as car crashes are always 50/50, and I felt this should be more faced on known illness rather than the most likely to die. I have also thought about adding Mark E Smith and Paul Alcock, but decided against them since they didn't receive that much publicity and are only worth 8 points whereas Bobby Zarin already received a lot of public attention at least on these forums. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to improve this so I could put out the best possible team by the end of the year...

  1. Leah Bracknell
  2. Patrick Cryne
  3. Rayya Elias (still joker)
  4. Jessica Falkholt
  5. Dean Francis
  6. Greg Gilbert
  7. Vanessa Goodwin
  8. Clive James
  9. Tessa Jowell
  10. Devin Lima
  11. Peter Lorimer
  12. John McCain
  13. Liam Miller
  14. Olivia Newton-John
  15. Fernando Ricksen
  16. Nobby Stiles
  17. Stefan Karl Stefansson
  18. Morgan Tsvangirai
  19. Marieke Vervoort
  20. Bobby Zarin

Another thought sparked by Rev BG's death, the last surviving people on the DL by year of birth:

1890: Rose Kennedy (d. 1995)

1893: Andres Segovia (d. 1987)

1894: Jim Joel (d. 1992)

1896: George Burns (d. 1996)

1898: Ninette de Valois (d. 2001)

1899: Lord Denning (d. 1999)

1900: Queen Mother (d. 2002)

1901: Princess Alice (d. 2004)

1902: Brooke Astor (d. 2007)

1903: Bob Hope (d. 2003)

1904: John Gielgud (d. 2000)

1905: Charles Lane (d. 2007)

1906: Albert Hofmann (d. 2008)

1907: Oscar Niemeyer (d. 2012)

1908: Claude Levi-Strauss (d. 2009)

1909: Ernest Gallo (d. 2007)

1910: Luise Rainer (d. 2014)

1911: Joseph Barbera (d. 2006)

1912: Karl Malden (d. 2009)

1913: Erich Priebke (d. 2013)

1914: Chapman Pincher (d. 2014)

1915: Herman Wouk (d. 2019)

1916: Olivia de Havilland (d. 2020)

1917: Vera Lynn (d. 2020)

1918: Billy Graham (d. 2018)

1919: Lord Carrington (d. 2018)

1920: George Shultz (d. 2021)

1921: Prince Philip (d. 2021)

1922: Norman Lear (d. 2023)

1923: Henry Kissinger (d. 2023)

1924: Jimmy Carter (living)

1925: Dick Van Dyke, Jacques Delors, and Pete Murray (living)

Stopped there, as there's 5 living 1922 names! Usually these days if you're on the DL, you're on it by your mid-90s, but there are the occasional Luise Rainer surprise additions, so the last few years there could still see a new debutant or two.
