Trying to distract myself from an upcoming dental appointment. If I'm correct, the only episode of Blankety Blank where every panellist is dead is 23 October 1982 - Lynsey De Paul, Fenella Fielding, Clement Freud, John Junkin, Wendy Richard, Ted Rogers

Episodes of Blankety Blank with only one panelist still alive:

9 November 1984 - Keith Barron, Kirsten Cooke, Pat Coombs, John Junkin, Roy Kinnear, Wendy Richard

17 September 1983 - Tim Brooke-Taylor, Lynsey de Paul, Ruth Madoc, Nicholas Parsons, Kathy Staff, Freddie Starr

11 September 1982 - Pat Coombs, Jack Douglas, Kenny Everett, Anita Harris, Patrick Moore, Wendy Richard

13 December 1979 - Pat Coombs, Jack Douglas, Judy Geeson, Keith Harris, David Jacobs, Beryl Reid

Two names proved hard to track down. Annabel Etkind has deleted all trace of her past as a harpist and light entertainer, and now works in children's nutrition. However, the whereabouts of Lennie Bennett's one-time comedy partner Albert Pontefract seems to be unknown. Anyone got an idea?

UPDATE: If this is the same Albert Pontefract (and it matches up with this and Bennett himself living in Lancashire), then he died in January.

Of course there's already a topic for it. *sigh*

Statistics I've found that people, knowing my luck, already know:

  • The closest we've come to a full knock-out of the top 5 is in 2013, 2016 and 2020, with 4/5 deaths.
  • The largest "red rows" (consecutive listings all dying) were in 2017, with the deaths of the bottom 4, Joost van der Westhuisen, Mary Tyler Moore, Errol Christie and Ian Brady, as well as 2-5 dying this year.

It moved to something else at 8000. I forget what but it was the reminder for me to go ask for a custom one instead.

I've worked up some data about the trends this year, if you'd like to look at another cut or have any questions please let me know.

Today is Friday Sept 11 2020,  this is day number 252 this (leap) year. The record deaths per year is 17, to beat this in 2020 DL must reach 18. As of today, there are 12 successes. It has been 48 days since the last death on July 26 (this is the longest span between deaths this year). On July 26, DL had a success on average every 17.25 days. If a death occurs today, the average span will be 19.4 days. At this same rate, DL will reach 17.23 successes.

In other words, we're facing a crisis here and every day we do not have a success we are less and less likely to reach our goal.

Below, orange represents the count, gray the trend, and yellow the record to beat.

As for presentation and delivery, you get a 10. As for correctly locating the Statistics thread, you get a 1.

Indeed. And given the historical average from recent previous years, we'd only expect one death every 25 or 30 days. Otoh, there are plenty of low-hanging fruit yet, none of them are getting any younger, and roughly 34 / 38 of them live in a country that's soon to begin its annual winter mortality rate increase. Never mind the effects of COVID, both direct and indirect (through health service disruption etc). For instance, the overall weekly mortality rate in the USA is currently about 15-20% higher than previous years (based on eyeballing the graph here, although it would help if they had a long term weekly average line as well as the "is this week in excess of what we'd normally expect" line: https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid19/excess_deaths.htm).

Could go either way.

The problem with trying to chart these things of course as a prediction of future events is that death is never regular in its patterns. I've seen 4 month Deathlist dry spells and 4-5 hits in one month, sometimes in the same year...

Update to Bucket Kicker's stats: with 104 more days this year, and being 4 deaths short of a record 18, the required rate for a new record would now be a pretty average one death every 26 days.  (The rate so far this year having been one death every 19 days).  Imho, once you factor in winter mortality and the COVID effect, the odds on a new record have shifted to better than even.

It’s an update on missed survivors. The fact that Nicholas Parsons was left off is still super annoying and shameful.

Lets just take a moment to appreciate the effort and dedication that has gone into literally going through every single year and listing every single person who has been on the list who has died while off the list.

There is one DL record that surprisingly the 2020 cull has not yet beaten - the total years on Death List of those that have died in the year.

After 14 deaths including such big hitters as O de H (13 years), Kirk (18 years) and Vera (12 years) you would have thought 2020 would have nailed this over all previous lists.

However it currently sits with a total of 72 years of Death List entries for its dead due to a lot of virgin appearances dying (6) balancing the average.

2004 with only 12 hits including Ronald Reagan (14 years) and Alistair Cooke (10 years) still currently hangs on to the record with 73 years of Death List entries for its dead. Only Rodney Dangerfield was a virgin appearance of those that died in 2004.

There are still 11 first timers surviving on the 2020 list that means it might still take two more deaths to break this record.

Here's the full list.
