Leonard Cohen

Recommended Posts

Having purchased and listened twice to his latest album I am reconsidering. After this release I think Leonard is going for a long lie down.

The day he dies my dad will play all his albums non stop.

I was worried that radio stations will play his music for 24 hours non stop, the same thing they did for Elvis and Freddy Mercury when they died.

Someone on Radio 6 will shove on 'Sisters of Mercy' or something but nothing like the reaction Bowie got and that's not dismissing him, I think he's great!

Bowie was a shock though, Len when the time comes, not so much.

Bowie certainly was a shock, but that was because he kept his illness a secret. At least with Cohen, it'll be old age that will get him.

After listening to his latest album, I would definitely put this guy on for 2017. At many points it sounds like his farewell. Correct me if I'm wrong, but he's smoked a lot of cigarettes in his 82 years. It sure sounds like it when he sings.

I would put him at like the 45 spot or something, but I can agree

Leonard Cohen passes away at 82

It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away.
We have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries.

A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date. The family requests privacy during their time of grief.

Searched for a thread about the Godfather of Gloom himself, but didn't find one despite many mentions in threads on the forum. As he's 82 now I think he's overdue for getting his own thread.

I was inspired to make the thread following reading this report:

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2016/oct/12/leonard-cohen-i-am-ready-to-die

This article links to another TL;DR interview in the New Yorker:

http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2016/10/17/leonard-cohen-makes-it-darker

He does have a new album out soon, but by the sounds of things his health has declined considerably - he was touring as recently as 2013 but the article says that he'll never tour again as he is understandably too old.

good call ! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-37946654

RIP my heart's fahkin broke. I'm taking Cohen's waltz--and keeping it close until we meet again.

Could the title be snatched by Stanley Cohen (Nobel laureate biochemist) born 1922, or Al Cohen (American magician) born 1926?

Eight days too late for Elaine Lustig Cohen though.

Nope

Well, fuck 2016...

I like to think that Bob Dylan's songs inspired a generation but Leonard Cohen's songs inspired all of mankind.

My biggest death of the year. His last album gave it away really. That was a way to say goodbye.

This is shit.

Leonard Cohen transcended lyricism, he was a poet. I could not say the same for Bob Dylan.

Cohen and David Bowie are tied for my biggest deaths of the year. One of the greatest poets and one of the greatest artists of our time.

RIP Leonard.

I educated my children by playing Who By Fire to them this morning as they ate breakfast. Sadly they were not overly impressed.
