Derby Dead Pool 2017

Can't seem to find it now but British singer Johnny Brandon apparently passed away earlier this year in New York (his adopted home). Saw it mentioned on Facebook or Twitter somewhere. Anyway, the deets were so precise that I have no reason to doubt it, plus he was very old. He had a top 10 hit in the UK Charts. Just seems to have faded into absolute obscurity. Not sure if he was ever a DDP pick but another good example of the Obituary press not picking up on someone who is relevant and should be covered.

I'd be utterly astonished if this was missed by usual sources.

Anything more concrete?

This is apparently the service programme from his funeral at St George's Episcopal Church, Manhattan, on July 30th:

Unfortunately it was deleted from Wikipedia on copyright grounds so we only have this thumbnail.

I wonder if anyone bothered to ask for permission to reproduce it.   People tend to be over-anxious about copyright.  Often asking politely and including the appropriate credit is all that's required.

So I guess his real name was Johnny Brandon?

Also, didn't know he was gay.

Telegraph, Times, Guardian etc have certainly got a big miss with this one.

Was he ever picked on the DDP? Not to my memory.

Someone on Wiki is persistent about Johnny Brandon - they've put in his death unsourced again.

The one and only time I've emailed to request an obit was to the Guardian in 2010 when I told them it was unfair Stella Nova nee Steve New - a unique pick for me on the DDP - hadn't had a write-up.  I obviously wasn't very subtle as  I got an email back minutes later basically asking me if I had a deadpool team called The Living End and I was so disturbed at being outed that I've never done it again. That said,  New/Nova did get his/her obituary in the end, but I couldn't honestly claim it had anything to do with me.

As for Cameron-Blackie, I can't see her getting an obit now, which means my run of unique picks could be coming to an end

Does mean someone at the Guardian is probably reading this forum! If you're hear you still owe Lukas Amman and Skip Homeier an obit.

They don't owe him one...

No. Just did not find a suitable thread and reported it here. I also reported in Dying bigots later, but I think the interest about him is about being picked for the DDP,  otherwise his death would have gone unreported on this site, so I posted it here. Don't want to steal your job.

Ain't my job. Voluntary.

Reason I started doing it was because some deaths were being missed and having to be caught up on, even though they had been reported.

Death reports imo go in the main forum, not here (unless the person has been quoted elsewhere, like extra-curricular, had to do that a couple of times myself). There is always a suitable thread - Dead of 2017 for this year. List of the Missed can go here after being reported in main forum, preferable since I don't cover those.

If someone does want to take this task on, I'm more than content to give it up. I do ask myself what the point is sometimes, every time a death gets reported here...

Anyway, tis just a peeve, no problems, blah blah blah..

I don't understand how a little known musician worldwide is able to get a telegraph obit but the second longest living ruler doesn't. That stuns me.

Seven teams picked her for the DDP.  Do we know who they all are?  ;)

There's also a Nobel prize winner waiting for an obit, and I'm pretty sure there was one previously in the year who never got one. (NYT and WashPo have carried obits for both of them, but it obviously doesn't count)

A helpful soul mentioned her plight right before Christmas on this forum. Might have put her on some shortlists, like the Telegraph obit team. It's happened before, pretty sure.

Of those seven, there's only one team whose hits all have Telegraph obits, The Deadest of the Dead. However, Jessi Zazu is only their third hit.

Saw Patrick Cryne in the crowd during Channel 5's not very good Goal Rush show. Looked like another 3 and a bit months is completely beyond him, tbh. Could wind up the pivotal hit this year.

We all missed Cecelia Gaudette getting an obit mention. Goes to show that it's not always the people on the deathlist forums who find a mention for a pick.
