Jigme Gyatso, Tibetian freedom fighter died a month ago at age 56.

https://tibet.net/jigme-gyatso-an-esteemed-former-tibetan-political-prisoner-dies-at-56-from-chinese-oppression/

It says he died of Chinese oppression at home. He was released from prison in 2016 and already in poor health.

Not an unnatural death according to our definitions, which might be important, because he's a DDP pick. But an obit seems unlikely now.

Just to be clear, the above is Jigme Gyatso, Tibetan freedom fighter, who was 56 (he has no Wiki page).

Not to be confused with Jigme Gyatso (wiki), Tibetan freedom fighter, who is 61.

Or Jigme Gyatso (wiki), Tibetan freedom fighter, who is 50.

Confused? Yeah, me too.

Ah, thanks, yes, I am confused, but I think the one who died was picked in the DDP, judging from the DDP description. It's the monk, not the filmmaker (they're all freedom fighters and all were or are imprisoned). However the DDP birth year ("Born 1961") might be wrong and belonging to the filmmaker, not the monk.

Despite news articles reporting she is deteriorating, she does not look critical at all. Don't know where these exaggerations come from.

Every time this thread gets updated, I think for sure its confirmation Pat Arrowsmith has died the one year I forgot to pick her in anything. 128 days to go, Pat, you can do it!

Vicky Phelan has not been well enough to get interviewed lately:

She was also not to be seen while her documentary was premiered. And she hasn't been on social media at all the past weeks. Seems like this is going to be it.

Times Obit for Alan Stuart, one of the four Scottish students who attempted the repatriation of the Stone of Destiny to Scotland in 1950: https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/alan-stuart-fp32zqct7

Incidentally, I saw a talking head with Ian Hamilton earlier this year, and although he's still upright, he's looking like a near possibility. He's the last survivor.

Edit: Just checked the Scottish obits, Stuart died back in March. Those obits do eventually come...

Ian Hamilton, the last survivor of the attempted repatriation of the Stone of Destiny, now being reported dead:

Facebook post from the UCU reporting the death of Avtar Singh Jouhl OBE (wiki), 84, Indian-British anti-racism campaigner and one-time president of the Indian Workers' Association.

Known, amongst other things, for hosting Malcolm X during his 1965 visit to the UK.

Guardian obit at some point I imagine.

Mercedes Colás de Meroño, vice president of Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo has died aged 95.

The alive main people of Mothers and Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo are getting older. These groups got Videla behind bars.

Here's a list of some of them who are still alive:

Grandmothers:

Mirta Acuña de Baravalle (b. 1925) One of the founders of these organizations.

Rosa Tarlovsky de Roisinblit (b. 1919) One of the founders of Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo and current Vice President.

Beatriz H. C. Aicardi de Neuhaus (b. 1925?) One of the founders of Grandmothers

Estela de Carlotto (b. 1930) Current President of Grandmothers

Mothers:

Hebe de Bonafini (b. 1928) Leader of Mothers, one of the founders of Mothers

Haydeé Gastelú (birth date likely 1928, she and the ones below have a Spanish wikipedia) One of the founders of Mothers

Taty Almeida (b. 1930)

Nora Cortiñas (b. 1930)

Elia Espen (b. 1931)

Vera Vigevani de Jarach (b. 1928)

Zaida Franz (b. 1928) Mother of astronomy student Ana Teresa Diego (1954-1976)

Sara Rus (b. 1927)

Carmen Loréfice (b. 1925)

Delia Giovanola (1926-2022)

Related individuals:

Adolfo Perez Ezquivel (b. 1931) Argentine activist, worked with the group

Mary-Claire King (b. 1946) Geneticist, helped identify missing people

-

Adolfo Schilingo (b. 1946) Argentine navy officer accused of the killings

Isabel Peron (b. 1931) Last one alive of the Presidents during the Dirty War

Miguel Etchecolatz (1929-2022) First person sentenced for actions during the Dirty War

Alfredo Astiz (b. 1951) Videla's friend, commander called the "Blonde Angel of Death" who ordered the killings of some of the Grandmothers in 1977. Has had cancer, possibly still has.

Hebe de Bonafini hospitalised . The most important mother alive, without a doubt.

Hebe de Bonafini has been discharged already one or two days ago but suffers from some chronic illness.

The official stated on his social networks that "after 3 days of hospitalization in the general ward and several studies to readjust the treatment of her chronic illnesses, with great humor and the invaluable strength that characterizes her, the Great Hebe returns home ".

"On today's date, Mrs. Hebe Pastor de Bonafini was discharged, and complementary studies were carried out in relation to chronic non-communicable pathologies and her medical treatment was adjusted according to the results. She is in good general condition and will continue to control and treatment on an outpatient basis", indicated the Director General of the Italian, Dr. Roberto Martínez.

DDP pick for the right livelihood theme team. My theory is that every winner of that award gets a QO. Let's see...

I was suprised she had only been mentioned once on these forums before, by me, in Ahtisaari's thread. I think all the members of The Elders will obit. Not counting the ones who have stepped down or kicked out, there's a total of 14 of them now. Mary Robinson is the Chair, nine other members and four Emeritus members: Jimmy Carter, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Martti Ahtisaari and Lakhdar Brahimi.
