Next Years Deathlist Creativity Thread

Recommended Posts

How would I would personally approach the list next year:

25 people who would return to the list next year from this year's list:

The bedblockers (ie people who made 8 or more appearances):

1. Kirk Douglas

2. Vera Lynn

3. Billy Graham

4. Olivia de Haviland

5. Fats Domino

People who are too big to be dropped:

6. Prince Phillip

7. Stan Lee

8. Jimmy Carter

9. Robert Mugabe

10. Queen Elizabeth

11. George Bush Sr

12. Pope Benedict XVI

People who are old and known to be ill:

13. Denis Norden

14. Herman Wouk

15. Bob Dole

16. Leslie Phillips

17. King Michael of Romania

People who aren't necessarily old but are still ill enough:

18. Leah Bracknell

19. Nobby Stiles

20. Jill Gascione

21. Valerie Harper

Wild card picks (picks who don't fall into any of the categories above but are the best/most interesting from the remaining 14 imo of course):

22. Lord Peter Carrington

23. Honor Blackman (I see her being Zsa Zsa's replacement)

24. Hosni Mubarak

25. Emperor Akihito

Picks who should return to the deathlist after some form of a hiatus (in order of when they made their first appearance):

26. Ozzy Osbourne

26. Henry Kissinger

27. Sean Connery

28. Aretha Franklin

29. Clive James

30. Doris Day

31. Jacques Chirac

Picks who are currently ill enough and famous enough

32. John McCain

33. Olivia Newton-John

34. Morgan Tsvangirai

35. Johnny Hallyday

Picks who are ill but not necessarily that famous in my eyes at least, but would still be justified to make the list:

36. Stefan Karl Stefansson

37. Tessa Jowell

38. Jose Jose

People who are old and ill enough:

39. Charlotte Rae

40. Barbara Bush

41. Franco Zeffereli

42. Sumner Redstone

43. Loretta Lynn

Interesting old people:

44. Sidney Poitier

45. Mikhail Gorbachev

46. Mel Brooks

47. Glynis Johns

Some good names on there but some don't feel deathlisty.

I think Baroness Trumpington deserves a place just for the interview she gave on Radio 4 when asked "Why are you retiring?"

She replied "Because I'm so bloody old"

Next Dunn

Just saw her interview on Newsnight tonight.

Seems to be one of these tough old birds, but nevertheless, radar-worthy....

How can you miss Jeanne Moreau, Gisèle Casadesus and Danielle Darrieux! That's three great French leading ladies in one month!

I say next year should have like three to five European actresses:

Monica Vitti (A MUST)

Gina Lollobrigida

Sophia Loren

Claudia Cardinale

Brigitte Bardot...

I'm not going to try and guess which 25 are debuting/returning to the list until around November/December, however, I'm going to say my opinion on which of this year's squad should return to the list if no one else dies (note, it's my opinion rather than what the committee will actually do if all of these people survive).

Centenarians (or will be centenarians next year):

1. Kirk Douglas

2. Herman Wouk

3. Olivia de Haviland

4. Lord Peter Carrington

5. Vera Lynn

Old people that could be potential bedblockers in the future (though I think a few of these are on the way out, those people are *):

6. Prince Philip

7. JPCD (he's on 5 lists already, would be a waste to drop at this point imo)

8. Stan Lee*

9. Bob Dole*

10. Robert Mugabe

11. George Bush Sr*

12. Henry Kissinger

13. Denis Norden

Those who are old but are ill enough to stay on the list:

14. Stirling Moss

15. Leslie Phillips

16. Neil Simon

Those who aren't necessarily old, but are ill enough to warrant a carry over:

17. Leah Bracknell

18. John McCain

19. Jill Gascoine

20. Clive James

The last five are for people who I think will make the list as the most deathlisty (though 4 of these are people who will be 96 or older next year, thus being too old to drop imo):

21. Betty White

22. Pierre Cardin

23. Doris Day

24. Bob Barker

25. Pope Benedict XVI

For the record, the rules are that the Committee 'can keep no more than 25' from the previous year.  There was a lot of shite on this year's list, apart from those who died and maybe another 15 ancient folk.
There is no rule saying the Committee MUST bring back 25 of the previous year's names, and all y'all keep saying 'here are the 25 I would keep'.  Allow Sir C to suggest there will be less than 25 keepers so feel free to add plenty of new names.

From the homepage: "Candidates cannot be famous solely for the fact they are likely to die in the near future and only 25 candidates can reappear from the previous year’s list."

Nowhere does it say 25 candidates MUST reappear.  Just that only that many CAN reappear.

When I was listing the 15 I think should be taken off. I got to 14 and the last place was hard to pick because I could understand why each of them would deserve a place on the list. So I would say there are at least 27 good names remaining but the committee might have BETTER names.
