Ughh... it's like you can follow the different stages of the disease with these people.

Rob Burrow: 2022

Doddie Weir: 2023

Stephan Darby: 2024

Yes horrible.

Doddie announced his diagnosis in 2017 though whereas Rob Burrow announced his diagnosis end of 2019. Burrow has been given an MND Fast Pass ticket.

Could we change the title of this thread to something less specific, so we can talk about people with MND, Parkinsons, Huntingtons and other similar diseases.

As it stands,  it's a bit like lumping all dementias as Alzheimers.

Degenerative diseases might suffice as an umbrella term.

Going to ask this again.  Any reason why not?

@Death Impends - sounds like a good idea above when you have a spare moment?  Especially with MND/ALS being frequently intertwined in the press now.

I think the 3 on the video I linked all have ALS form of MND so I'm not sure if it was necessary for you to post this?

It's not intended as a comment on your post.

As I said earlier,  the thread title could be broadened to include other degenerative diseases such as Huntington's.

People have been using this thread to post about people, eg Marieke Vervoort, with other diseases, using ALS as a catch-all term much as people use Alzheimer's for any form of dementia.

Redefining the thread would validate such inclusions.

Noted

I've broadened the scope of the thread title now

Shouldn't the subhead now be "It's not just Lou Gehrig's/Stephen Hawking's/Woody Guthrie's disease"?

Jaan Kaplinski, Estonian poet, former parliament member and philosopher who was once nominated for a Nobel in literature has had ALS for the last four years and he's 80.

Thought I'd mention the passing of Canadian football player Michael Soles here as he battled ALS since 2005, for 16 years. (https://www.cfl.ca/2021/07/08/cfl-als-mourn-passing-michael-soles/)

Currently living people notable enough to have a wikipedia page with long ALS battles (diagnosed before 2010):

Early 1990s (around 1991?) - Jason Becker (b. 1969) Virtuoso musician.

2000 - Yasuhiko Funago (b. 1957) Japanese politician, member of the House of Councillors since 2019 after getting elected alongside Eiko Kimura.

2002 - Steve Smith (1964-2021) Football fullback.

2003 - Tempt One (~1968?-2023) Graffiti artist.

2005 - Augie Nieto (1958-2023) Life Fitness founder.

2007 - O. J. Brigance (b. 1969) Football linebacker.

Rob Burrow returns to Headingley

Sobering viewing.

He says: "Lockdown has accelerated my demise":

Supposedly, he was doing okay until then. Which leaves us with the question whether his variant of ALS is one of the faster kind, or whether it just looks that way because he didn't work out.

I kind of think it's the former.

Steve Smith being reported dead:

DDP pick I believe. http://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2021/celebs_S.html#smithasx19

19 years of ALS... I had a period of picking him in deadpools 2-3 years ago, because he looked so close to death. I should have looked more at the speed of the decline.

Well, Rob Burrow was well enough to attend a charity lunch. Also doesn’t look the worst here. Dunno, this case kind of confused me…

He seems to be quite confident, at the moment:

Sadly he seems to have deteriorated pretty fastly.
