Not sure if this fits in here, but Chris Kamara is leaving Sky Sports at end of the season.

I saw he's recently been diagnosed with Speech Apraxia. I looked it up and in adults it is usually because any of the following:

  • Stroke
  • Traumatic head injury
  • Tumor or surgical trauma
  • Neurodegenerative diseases

Didn't last that long in the end, given the hope the treatment would slow ALS/MND.

Recipient of what is still my favourite DDP description I ever wrote.

Sads news from the music world.

Just announced, founding member of the Golden Earring guitarist George Kooymans announced he's suffering from ALS. This means the death blow for the band who have played in the line up since 1969, and by that are the longest playing band in the same line up worldwide. These were childhood heroes. We used to vacation in a small town in the summer. They played the park annually and we could hear the concert from the back yard.

Music magazine Oor has an interview with Kooymans this month. He's only slowly getting worse, can still drive a car (!), can still walk but uses a walker so he won't drown in the pond in his garden and uses a wheelchair for longer trips. He's working on mixing the album he made with Henny Vrienten (died in may) and Boudewijn de Groot, but cannot play guitar anymore.

Right now he doesn't look bad for a 74-year old.

Name for your lists, artist/activist Anthony Carbajal (not to be confused with Mexican former professional footballer Antonio Carbajal):

He's been battling ALS for over eight years, been a part of a lot of things, documentaries etc and it's apparently progressed quite quickly recently. He said that he feels like he's "near the end" last month.

Found out about him searching for updates on Augie Nieto (mentioned a few posts up) who still seems tough as hell.

ALS Treatment

Only works for 2% of cases but wouldn't it be wonderful if one day this thread could be closed because no one died from this terrible disease any more.

Yes horrible.

Doddie announced his diagnosis in 2017 though whereas Rob Burrow announced his diagnosis end of 2019. Burrow has been given an MND Fast Pass ticket.

They've been reunited but only of sorts.

Stephen Darby, able to walk in the original, is now too ill to attend. Rob Burrow can no longer talk and Doddie Weir is a fraction of the man he used to be. Burrow says he's stabilised since lockdown.

It's on a video in BBC breakfast, just trying to find the link. I think Burrow and Darby are likely to go first; Doddie is probably likely to battle on until 2024 judging by their progression.

Antero Laukkanen, Member of the Parliament of Finland since 2015, diagnosed with ALS:

He's 64 and his legs aren't working that well anymore, so my bet is that he's got 2-3 years at most.

Watching Antero Laukkanen, currently on live tv on a smaller Finnish channel.. He's declined a bit, looks frail and thin and talks slightly unclearly. Uses a rollator now. Very sharp however

Checking on other ALS sufferers, Anthony Carbajal is now bedbound.

Yasuhiko Funago looks very frail:

Also Marcus Stewart was diagnosed with MND last month

Could be one for the main list...

I think we once saw that it takes 8 months from ALS end-of-life care to death. It was exactly those 8 months for Joost Van Der Westhuizen and for David Hagen.

They are thinking about putting Rob into end-of-life care, so is it 8 months plus a little extra?

I think this is a primer article to maximise publicity when he goes. I would say days or weeks rather than months
