The Counterculture of the 1960's

Recommended Posts

One of the topics that I am the most interested in is the counterculture of the 1960's and early 1970's. There is just something about that era that always seem so fascinating to me, and makes me wonder what influential figures are still around from that era. So behold, I have made a list of people who have put in major influence from the counterculture in one way or another. I also do wonder which of these will be the last survivor of this group of very influential individuals. Anyways, here are the names:

Richard Alpert; professor, spiritual teacher; (1931 - 2019)

Bill Ayers; activist, professor; (1944 - )

Joan Baez; musician, activist; (1941 - )

Sonny Barger; Hells Angels; (1938 - 2022)

Stewart Brand; environmentalist, author; (1938 - )

Tommy Chong; comedian, social critic; (1938 - )

Peter Coyote; Digger, actor; (1941 - )

David Crosby; musician; (1941 - 2023)

Bob Dylan; musician; (1941 - )

Daniel Ellsberg; whistleblower; (1931- 2023)

Bob Fass; radio host; (1933 - 2021)

Jane Fonda; actress, activist; (1937 - )

Peter Fonda; actor, activist; (1940 - 2019)

Todd Gitlin; activist; (1943 - 2022)

Wavy Gravy; hippie, activist; (1936 - )

Alan Harber; activist, (DOB unknown - )

Hugh Hefner; publisher; (1926 - 2017)

Paul Krassner; author; (1932 - 2019)

Charles Manson; conspirator turned to mass murderer; (1934 - 2017)

Richard "Cheech" Marin; comedian, social critic; (1946 - )

Michael McClure; poet; (1932 - 2020)

Barry Miles; author, impresario; (1943 - )

Ralph Nader; consumer advocate, author; (1934 - )

Graham Nash; musician, activist; (1942 - )

Jack Nicholson; screenwriter, actor; (1937 - )

Yoko Ono; musician, artist, activist; (1933 - )

Mark Rudd; activist; (1947 - )

Ed Sanders; musician, activist; (1939 - )

John Searle; professor, free speech advocate; (1932 - )

John Sinclair; poet, activist; (1941 - 2024 )

Interesting topic, thanks for making it Joey. I could see someone like Neil Young living 20 more years.

Aye, very welcome thread

Had no idea Wavy Gravy was 81 (but just checked it and his birthday is in May). He'll definitely get a q/o and they'll call him Wavy Gravy - not Newton Romney!

Aye. I suspect that majority of the names are QO worthy. Only one off the top of my head that I think they may not get a QO is Alan Haber, but then again, we don't know what year he was born in (though if I had a guess, he was probably born somewhere between the late 20's and early 30's). So, who's first? I say Hugh Hefner.

Had literally only heard of about fifteen people on that list.

The list that Roey gave, apart from Yoko and NJ, is pretty much imperialist.

And nearly all of them led to veganism.

Think on that.

Although not on the list, I think this is a suitable place for her - Kate Millett, a feminist author and activist, has died aged 82. She is best known for her book Sexual Politics (Guardian review), released in 1969. She was prominent in the second wave feminist and civil rights movements, and received a Guardian profile.

And just like that, the first person off the list to die was the oldest person on the list, Hugh Hefner.

So who's next? I say Bob Fass.

Thatcher, just wanted to say I appreciate the effort you put into your posts.  Didn't want you to think it goes unnoticed or unappreciated.

Aye, far more infrastructure planning goes into those posts than the namesake put into city planning in the 80s, or summat.

Yeah, now all they have to do is learn how to search the forum, quote people who have mentioned the person involved and thus give credit and post in a correct thread and they'll be perfect..

Aye, but don't let your dislike of me cloud that judgement of yours:rolleyes:

Edit: Sorry was just practising how to quote people who'd mentioned the person involved, like you advised!

Took the bait as I expected.

First, not directed at you specifically, it goes out to most current users of this site. It's a mess, overall.

Second, Haven't clicked your links. I don't dislike you, it doesn't help your cause that you have a hate figure as your name. I have positively liked some of your posts, but not everyone who sits in the House of Lords is a politician, and there is a hastiness to your posts. Don't accept help or guidance when it's offered, I really don't care anymore.

Third, my post was my parting shot at the main forum. Tata.
