Passed-Punks & No-Wavers

Recommended Posts

A thread I've been waiting to open for quite a while, and now with the growing concern over Mark E. Smith, David Thomas cancelling shows, the steady rate of demise in these particular sub geners (in which I include Coldwave, Post/Dance-Punk, Gothic Rock, No Wave, Industrial, etc.) and the altogether senescence (adding to a sometimes unhealty life habits) of some household names - the necessity is growing.

I did say earlier this year that I had a feeling that a major new wave will be very ill before the end of the year. I think Mark E Smith and David Thomas confirms my feelings to be correct this time around...

Notable omissions...

Andy Summers, 75 on NYE.

Shane McGowan 60 on Xmas day, and fucked.

And obviously Jet Black, 80 next year, and fucked.

Patti Smith might be considered a notable omission too. Good idea on starting this thread.

I note notable new wave/post punk bands that aren't mentioned at all and are more notable than some of these artists includes XTC, DEVO, and Echo and The Bunnymen. Oh and Brian Eno definitely deserves a shout as well...

Gary Numan - but he already has his own thread.

Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, but he's far too stable today.

Al Jourgensen?

Andrew Eldritch? (Dark Wave)

Marc Almond?

Mark Hollis?

The Alarms Mike Peters still has ongoing cancer concerns, and SLFs Henry Cluney wasn't that well a year or so back.

John Cooper Clarke, 69 in January.

Still performing, but has this big "won't see 75" sign over his head.

*and he'll see Michael Caine again and again...in Hell.

He doesn't have his own thread, from what I've seen. He has been mentioned, in other threads, though.

Would you include Blondie in this grouping? Yesterday my daughter was watching an old episode of Ru Paul's Drag Race where Debbie Harry and Chris Stein were guest judges. Debbie looked great but didn't seem entirely sure what was going on but Chris Stein looked like shit but was very sharp.

Thurston Moore is about to go on tour again next year.

Henry Cluney played at a fringe festival here in Minnesota last year.

Kim Gordon's cancer is in remission, although she went through a lot during her treatment.

And Genesis was diagnosed with chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia in October too so would be a good pick depending on how advanced it is.

I’m getting more and more convinced that, minus the marriage part, this will turn into a similar story to John Wetton. Though I’m still not sure if I’ll pick him on my main 20 next year, especially since we don’t know what the health issues are yet. They do sound at least somewhat severe however...

The U.K Subs founder and lead singer Charlie Harper is still going strong.

Just saw him on local ITV Anglia News, who are doing a big feature on Punk this week,  gigging in Cambridge.

73 years old and looking like he can do another 20 no bother.
