Imelda 621 Posted January 24, 2018 My first hit of the year. Shane MacGowan next?
RadGuy 1,614 Posted January 24, 2018 Didn't pick him in the DDP. Just like Wetton last year. When will I learn? Also, judging by this pattern, the Deathlist 2019 can expect it's first hit on January 23rd.
Toast 16,130 Posted January 24, 2018 I didn't pick him either - thought he'd shamble on for a bit yet. Sad. End of an era.

Indeed #50 to die at all has only happened in 1999 (Ernie Wise), 2012 (Clive Dunn) and 2017 (Ian Brady)...
Joey Russ 7,220 Posted January 24, 2018 As for my decision to include him on my DDP team, well, I just had a really a strong feeling after reading those cancellations back in December. I just felt like he wasn’t going to make it. That, and I kept saying a major new wave artist was going to be ill, and he was the closest thing to that, so I thought it would’ve been immoral for me not to pick him. I enjoyed his music, he has a very unique style.

arrowsmith 445 Posted January 24, 2018 1 hour ago, maryportfuncity said: So, has it ever happened before that the #50 pick was the first to go? I don't think this question was adequately answered. Though the list has been successful three times in the past with number 50, this is the first time number 50 has been the first to die.
time 8,595 Posted January 24, 2018 (edited) Can we change the ‘dead’ tag to ‘fallen’? Edited January 24, 2018 by DevonDeathTrip Dead tag duly edited 3
FixedBusiness 407 Posted January 24, 2018 To be fair, I was expecting the front page headline to be something like "Mark has Fallen" or something, but aye they might change it seeing as they did that with Downie too.

DevonDeathTrip 2,358 Posted January 24, 2018 Mrs DDT assures me that we saw The Fall live when we were at Uni in Glasgow. The problem is I have no recollection of these events whatsoever. That probably says more about the psychedelic blizzard I almost permanently inhabited at the time, than it does about The Fall being in any way forgettable. Anyway, RIP you curmudgeonly, misanthropic old bugger. It was a privilege to have seen you perform, even if I can't remember a damned thing about it.

CoffinLodger 1,248 Posted January 24, 2018 I am just stunned and devastated at this news. He was bigger than George Michael imo . Didn't even know he was ill ! Hope he's having a good chat with John Peel wherever he is !

Phantom 2,533 Posted January 24, 2018 R.I.P. Mark. I got to meet you just the once at John Peel's birthday bash many moons ago. You will be sadly missed.
LongBlackLimousine 8 Posted January 24, 2018 In terms of name recognition Mark E Smith is clearly a less well-known lead vocalist than John Wetton - lead singer of Asia and Asia was a band known Worldwide . But Wetton was rejected from the 2017 list and as a result Deathlist missed out having 18 deaths in 2017 !
themaninblack 2,112 Posted January 24, 2018 Wetton might have been better known Worldwide but Mark E Smith is the more "deathlisty" name. A great choice IMO...
