Tbf, I'm not sure if The Fall has ever toured in Zimbabwe, so I'm not surprised Mugabe doesn't know him...

Why are you being so racist, what you saying, white rock bands never your Africa?

Ended up under Ardwick Bridge
With some veterans from the U.S. Civil War
They were under Irish patronage
We shot dead a stupid sergeant
But I got hit in the crossfire
The lucky hit made me hit a time lock

who else could write lyrics like that......................................

How did Ian Donaldson crash his car?

Veered too far to the right.

Dead, according to the fallnews Twitter account. Awaiting confirmation elsewhere.

Really? Guess that wasn’t as bad of a DDP gamble as I thought he was if true...

It’s on his website so it’s probably true...

Also, John Wetton of 2018 comment turned out to be very accurate to the extent of the same month as well...

RIP.

Honestly can't say I was a fan at all. I know nothing of his oeuvre.

RIP etc. But not a big fan. Remember just one of their songs called Victoria. That was quite good. But it might have been a cover version.

RIP I guess. I didn't know him either, but I applauded the committee for its choice. Now I wonder if those music journalists describing The Fall's final concert had some VERY rose-tinted glasses on.

Has a No.50 ever been the first of the year to go?

Think this is only the fourth time #50 was a hit, after Brady, Clive Dunn, and Ernie Wise...

The Fall were beloved by Peel.

They were very very good.

They were very prolific.

They 'were' Mark E Smith.

Much missed.

Night Sir.

A ghost in his own house.

Yeah, 'Victoria' was an old Kinks song.

So, has it ever happened before that the #50 pick was the first to go?

As for the actual health problems, things seem to have taken a turn for the worse in late 2017. Some of the statements from the band and the management (Vander):

Maybe he's in a worse state than I'd thought. We will just have to see.

I guess we've got our answer even sooner than I thought. His death is not at all surprising considering all the bad news about him from late 2017.

He may have been one of the less famous candidates on this year's list, but his early death and instant BBC/Mirror obits surely justify his inclusion. Good pick. B)
