Walter Mondale

Recommended Posts

On Friday, former Democratic Vice President and 1984 Presidential Candidate Walter Mondale of Minnesota will turn 90 years old.

Certainly deathlisty, considering Former VP's Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, George H.W. Bush, and Dick Cheney have all made appearances on the deathlist. Mondale, along with President Jimmy Carter are the oldest remaining President and Vice Presidential duo.

There's also a recent update about the Former Vice President.

At around the 42 second mark and in the thumbnail you can see Vice President Mondale who escorted newly seated Senator Tina Smith to her swearing-in.

Has gotten frailer over the years but is on his feet looks healthy for an 89-year-old widower.

Very glad he's on the list. A good call!

Yes, I like his addition and stopped short of asking for him in the recently created Michael Dukakis thread.

I mean, I kind of thought he would eventually occupy Jimmy Carter's spot - who has proved to be very resilient (oldest US president ever!), but will most likely die this year.

OH I missed this one. Nice. Could be a good pick. Carter, Mrs Carter and Carters VP on same list.

Coming up to 93 I see. Is he the longest lived Vice-President, of those who never went on to become President themselves?

John Nance Garner, FDR's first veep, lived to 98.

Also the longest lived Presidential candidate from the two main parties is 1936 Republican candidate Alf Landon (who suffered a landslide defeat similar to Mondale) who lived to be 100. Some way yet for Mondale to go.

Wow, the 8th one on my list! Rest in Peace Walter!  Just missed again! https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/obituaries/walter-mondale-dead/2021/04/19/c14c277e-a1d6-11e6-8832-23a007c77bb4_story.html?utm_campaign=wp_main&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&fbclid=IwAR2ZWBvQ-KA4jPJ8fubLQtHKPUEgXWTPzlugVWuOzK9ais82AnOcBhs7hPM

Died without a single interesting, amusing or informative post in his thread, including this one. Dickie O, or rockabilly, he was not - just a boring old man whose sole purpose in life was to provide the 8th hit of AD 2021.

The NYT's endorsement of him in 1984 said that he had "the flair of a trigonometry teacher" or something to that effect, which is quite a thing to say about the guy you're saying should be your country's next leader. It was, of course, more of an anti-endorsement of Reagan than an endorsement for Mondale.

I've always thought of him as more or less a fundamentally decent guy, but certainly not suited for running for higher office. He was the kind of person who was better suited for a long career as a legislator than in the executive. Of course, nobody was beating Reagan that year anyway.

Surprising for me that he's gone before both Carter and Dole (his rival VP candidate in 1976).

Quite suprising. I remember that he talked at some virtual meeting a couple of months ago?

Also left a message that he'll be with his wife and daughter now.

My bet is that it was something quick, maybe cancer.

I'd have thought he would have outlived the Carter couple

The man was 93 years old, so it could be anything. Wikipedia speaks of natural causes (which can mean about anything).

One of those out of the blue old folk dying in their sleep ones, I see. Forgot he was on the list too.
