Randy Newman

Recommended Posts

Thread for Randy Newman, the happiest pessimist in the music business, two-time Oscar winner, three-time Emmy winner, six-time Grammy winner, 74 years old.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randy_Newman

He just had to cancel his European tour because of a "severe knee condition":

He'll probably live on for 10 more years, but I thought he deserves his own thread, he's just that kind of guy.

The tour dates Newman cancelled in January 2023 due to a neck operation haven't been rescheduled at all yet. In fact he hasn't played a single gig in over two years, and I don't think I can find any media appearances or interviews with him in the past 12 months...

I can't find anything either - even his Facebook page seems a little light on anything involving him actually being seen (except for a birthday announcement last November that may or may not have been a recent picture then). Given I have a bit of a connection to him (he and my mentor were both inducted as Disney Legends the same year), and I'm also a fan of some of his more obscure stuff (Cop Rock especially), I hope he's doing well.

Sells his discography for $150 million:

I kind of cant wait for the "who should be on the DeathList" thread, just to suggest Newman, Petula Clark and Liza Minnelli.

Edit: Where did I get that number from... reddit...???

Oh yeah, and more interesting for our purposes, he just had a phone interview with the New York Times:

He recently broke his neck twice (!). His hand movement has recovered though, suggesting there's some life in him yet.

I was going to nominate him for next year too, considering how quiet he’s gone. Good that he’s well enough to do a phoner but I still think we’ll probably not see him on stage again.

He's quoted in the article insofar saying that he wants to. And it's not impossible, though I may be biased in hoping that, as him and I share a couple of friends (living and dead).
