Inverse Survivor Dead Pool I

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Here are the rules for a new survivor style pool I would like to try out:

I will post at the start, a list of 60 of the usual suspects in the deadpooling game (names like Leah Bracknell, George HW Bush, Clive James, etc.)  It will include most of the surviving drop 40 from the Derby DP, plus a selection of others of my choosing that I see circulated about in deadpools.  It will not necessarily include everyone on your favorite list - - so don't worry if there is a big name not there that you expect will not make it until dinner tomorrow.  At the start of the pool, each player must select 10 names from the master list and post them to the thread.  Your first name is worth 10 pts if they die and your last name is worth 1 pt.  Of course with the word "Inverse" in the title of the pool, your goal is to select 10 people who will survive the month.  You do NOT want to score, you want to get out of the month with a zero.  The player with the highest score after the first month is ELIMINATED and the rest of us move on to month two, again selecting 10 NEW names off the master list, which I may (or may not) update to replace any names that died (or any that miraculously have recovered from whatever malady they had the month before).  You cannot select any name in consecutive months.  Again we will eliminate the highest scoring player at the end of month 2.  In month 3, you may use up to 5 names from month 1 (and no names from month 2) to make your new list.  In month 4, all names from month 1 are fair game, but only 5 from your month 2 list, and so on.  We proceed like this until we get down to the championship match, mano a mano for the title, which I intend to make happen in Dec of 2019.  That's it in a nutshell.

If you are still interested, here are a few finer details:

For an inverse pool, there needs to be a penalty of sorts for players that delay getting their teams in.  Otherwise, this is of obvious advantage while the rest of us are risking a big score.  So once the month starts, a player will be subject to a 5 point hit if ANY of the names on the master list of 60 die prior to him/her submitting a team.  A second death on the master gets a 6 point hit, and so on, until your team is submitted.  So late is not good, it could eliminate you fast.  You may submit your team at any time prior to the end of the month to avoid these potential penalties.

Ties may be common.  There are several ways in which we will break them:

If we have a month where NO TEAM scores a hit (hopefully unlikely, but sometimes it gets slow . . . ), all lists will carry on into the next month, no changes allowed.

In the early rounds, if two or more players end the month with the highest score, we will back up to the previous month and look at their scores.  If that doesn't break all ties, we will carry forward one month, and those two (or more) teams will go head to head to see who stays and who goes home.  We will carry those head to head matches into a third month if needed, at which point it will become sudden death = the first one of those teams to score any hit will be eliminated.

In the later rounds, say when we are down to 6 players or less, we will back up to the previous month and look at the head to head scores, then if still tied, we will go straight to sudden death.

If I get a lot of entries, I will need a way to cut the field down faster to keep my goal of ending in Dec 2019.  So there may be months where all tied players may be eliminated.  I also may select certain months (say this Dec, and Jun 2019) and indicate those as multiple elimination months, even if there are no ties.

Later rounds I may require teams to bulk up to 20 names per month, to help insure that we keep getting hits and eliminations each month.

Be advised this pool will require a monthly effort to submit a team and last up to 16 months, depending on the number of entries (and how good you are).  So please do not sign up if you know you are going to bail out after a month or two.

If you like the idea and you want to play, please like this post.

11 teams are interested so far, see my post down the page.  Here is a repost of the first list of 60 names:

Leah Bracknell, Kirk Douglas, G H W Bush, Prince Philip, Clive James, John McCain, Olivia deHavilland, Vera Lynn, Beverly Clearly, Herman Wouk, Norman Lloyd, Robert Mugabe, Doris Day, Nobby Stiles, Stefan Karl Stefansson, Jimmy Carter, Fernando Ricksen, Greg Gilbert, Linda Nolan, Jill Gascoigne, Marieke Vervoort, Devin Lima, Prunella Scales, Simon Ricketts, Leslie Phillips, Jimmy Greaves, Denis Norden, Henry Kissinger, Queen E II, Le Duc Anh, Genesis P-Orridge, Jose Jose, Pete Frates, I M Pei, Katherine Johnson, Sheila Mercier, Lucia Hiriart, Sumner Redstone, Bob Dole, Carol Channing, Bob Barker, John Paul Stevens, Dilip Kumar, Kenny Rogers, Norman Lear, Pierre Cardin, Yasuhiro Nakasone, Al Jaffee, Javier Perez de Cuellar, Luis Escheverria, John Cruickshank, Hugh Downs, George Shultz, Carl Reiner, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Spencer P Jones, Rick Flair, Don Lusk, Richard A. Overton, Aretha Franklin.

Er, so it’s basically a rehash of the Inverse Pool except you submit monthly instead of having a list for the full year, right? And people get removed monthly too.

Also, really am not a fan of asking for likes in order to see who likes the game idea. A reply to the thread can easily do the same trick  in seeing how much support you have for a pool idea.

You'd probably have the odd quiet month in which nobody dies out of the 60 names, and nobody scores. Perhaps make this a game of four quarters instead? Eg september -> november, december -> february, etc.  You could even have it that way with zero repetition of team members between quarters of the year, to encourage tactically selecting a few moderate risk people for the team in earlier quarters.  With three elimination rounds and then lowest score in final quarter to win it?

I haven't done any death pooling in ages so I'll give this a shot.

Yes, it's like the inverse, but with survivor-style elimination.  A bastardization of several other pools, I think.  You have to like the type of pool that takes ongoing effort, rather than submitting once and then waiting a year to see how it shakes out.    And with the "likes"I was trying to keep the thread short and manageable so we are not on page 3 before the thing even gets off the ground.  With your post I am unsure about whether you thought it was worth trying or not, so can I respond with a confused?

I thought of that, and addressed it in the "ties" section, thus:

If we have a month where NO TEAM scores a hit (hopefully unlikely, but sometimes it gets slow . . . ), all lists will carry on into the next month, no changes allowed.

So in this scenario we would in effect have longer scoring periods, but I like the idea of shorter ones for two reasons:  It moves the game along, and it eliminates people faster and more of them.  In thinking about these carryover months, I would also like to add that for each additional month without a score, we add another elimination, so the top two scores are out after the second month, etc.  If we do come down to having more than two people left at the end of next year, I would say in the final month, the lowest score wins it.  But my goal will be to get it down to the final two heavyweights.  Thanks for your comments!

I would play but I think I entered a monthly deathpool before and then just forgot which one it was and haven't seen it since. I definitely enjoy inverse deathpools quite a bit though :)

Is there going to be any logic to the way you choose the names - maybe have it be not necessarily 60 names but a mix of deathlist and top DDP pick names? I'm not too fussed really, just wondering about your logic / hoping for a bit less randomness in the names!

I know what you mean about forgetting your entries.  I keep track of my entries ok, but often lose track and forget about "trade" periods and miss them every time.

My logic/goal will be to make it difficult for players to select a list of 10 that will easily skate through the month.  So in addition to most of the Derby Drop 40, I will try to add names that all have a pretty good chance of dying in the next month or so.  The worse job I do, the easier it is for you guys.  However, all it takes is one big mistake on an otherwise good list, and you can be the one going home.  Somebody will hopefully make that mistake every month.  As we get down to just a few people left in the tournament, I may make contestants submit a 20 (or more) name list, to help insure the game ends on time.  Thanks for your comments!

Alright, I'll try it. It's probably my only chance to create a dead pool team for the next four months anyways...

Anything that's pick from a list and doesn't involve any actual research...

I'd have a crack.

Apart from the DL Cup which is very well managed, I really can't enter these rolling deadpools. Fixed term pools suit me better, Sorry.

Hey, no worries, it's all what you prefer.  But me, I get antsy if I have to wait 12 months to put together a new team of potential stiffs.  I am sure I am going to hit a point eventually where I have too much deadpooling going on though, and have to cut back.  I wish it was more scattered year round and not mostly bunched up around the start of each year.  Trying to inch things that way with this type of pool.

Well, I didn't quite get to 12, but 11 is close enough, the game will be easily manageable, and we may yet get a few more entries before the closing date.  In the meantime, we have a game.  See the rules at the beginning of this thread.  Here is your list of 60 names to start the game.  PM your first team of 10 to me by Aug 31st, the first round will occur during the entire month of Sep.  Remember your second round team cannot contain any names from your first team, so you may want to plan ahead and not use all your gimmies in the first round.  I will PM my list to one of the first to submit.

Leah Bracknell, Kirk Douglas, G H W Bush, Prince Philip, Clive James, John McCain, Olivia deHavilland, Vera Lynn, Beverly Clearly, Herman Wouk, Norman Lloyd, Robert Mugabe, Doris Day, Nobby Stiles, Stefan Karl Stefansson, Jimmy Carter, Fernando Ricksen, Greg Gilbert, Linda Nolan, Jill Gascoigne, Marieke Vervoort, Devin Lima, Prunella Scales, Simon Ricketts, Leslie Phillips, Jimmy Greaves, Denis Norden, Henry Kissinger, Queen E II, Le Duc Anh, Genesis P-Orridge, Jose Jose, Pete Frates, I M Pei, Katherine Johnson, Sheila Mercier, Lucia Hiriart, Sumner Redstone, Bob Dole, Carol Channing, Bob Barker, John Paul Stevens, Dilip Kumar, Kenny Rogers, Norman Lear, Pierre Cardin, Yasuhiro Nakasone, Al Jaffee, Javier Perez de Cuellar, Luis Escheverria, John Cruickshank, Hugh Downs, George Shultz, Carl Reiner, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Spencer P Jones, Rick Flair, Don Lusk, Richard A. Overton, Aretha Franklin.

Almost made a terrible mistake. Started reviewing the list and then made my selections just before I submitted them I realised I had picked the ones I thought would die.  I had done both Sept & October.

Because I'm easily confused and can't see worth a damn anymore i copied that list into a csv and put into a spreadsheet so i could list them vertically for easier viewing (none of this is in the least interesting) but is pre-amble to:

Because they are now in a spreadsheet it shows numbered lines and it appears to have 61.

Which is A: probably immaterial and B: just fixed by Aretha anyway.

If as Clint once nearly said "there's something wrong with my adding". And it is actually 60 (and now 59) do we get a substitute?

If you could screenshot said spreadsheet and share it with us, I would be as grateful as a virgin for a blowy.

Not sure how useful that is, still to get my head around putting images from my pc on here rather than linking them from t'interweb.

Eta: I now notice having posted it that if you click on the image it is big enough to be legible so at least I got sufficient resolution apparently. ETA2: Steffanson one person now.

Ah. Think I've solved the 61 names issue: You've listen 'Stefan Karl' and 'Stefansson' as two separate people. Not sure if that means Wormy needs to come up with another name to replace Aretha?

Yes, you nailed it.

Thanks I'll amend it.

It'll be an extra space or something when I imported it, dropped my beer on the kb or summat. I didn't actually do it manually and like, you know, read it...

Reading it is the next step :)

And ya, I guess wormy might want to add one? Or we go with 59....

Folks, now that I already have 7 entries in hand, we will have to play the first month with 59.  I figured that Aretha would not make it to the start of the round, but would also not be picked to  survive it, either.  It may go even lower with two weeks of "dead" time before the start.  But that is not really a problem, 60 is an arbitrary number anyway.  As I stated, by the time we get to round 2, there will likely be a few less, so I may add names each month, or I may not.  The main thing is we are all gardening with the same batch of earthworm food, and the cleverest (or luckiest) players will do the right thing with the group we have.  One thing that I did not specify, but stands to reason, is that if a pick dies before the starting gun, they can add a replacement - AT THAT SPOT.  Please don't shuffle your whole list to accommodate a new name.

Also, I can list the names vertically in the future if it is preferred by some.  I only did it  paragraph style to save room in the thread.  Carry on!
