I had no idea until now that Stan Laurel was English, I must be really off today.

What about Charlie Chaplin, he is obviously a master of the slapstick as well.

I know where they were born, I looked up Stan Laurel's birthplace and as for Chaplin, everyone knows he's English, I was merely stating he is the greatest English slapstick artist.

Stan was born in Ulverston, which is now part of Cumberland.

But in those days was Lancashire (which is also where George Formby came from who wasn't a slapstick comic, but was often quite funny).

Despite being 90, he looks like he is still going strong.

Is that his daughter in the photo? Or Kim Cattrall?

It's his daughter, son and grandson in the photo.

It's not...it's now part of Cumbria. Cumberland was the most northerly county in the west of England - but was wrapped up in 1974 with Westmorland and Lancashire North-of-the-Sands to become Cumbria. Fascinating stuff.

Lots of love

On the subject of George, George's dad George Snr. was known on the music-hall stage as "The Wigan Nightingale" His act consisted mainly of a severe cough. A genuine bronchial condition which killed him in his early forties when he suffered a haemmorage of the larynx.

He always had to have an oxygen tent by the side of the stage. The audience found it side-splittingly funny. Apparently.

Norman was in the local papers this week. He's doing/has done one last performance before he retires. He was looking well it has to be said.

'Sigh'.....

I know this is the posting equivalent of putting ones head on the block and shouting to the assembled crowd "Bring it on!", but..........

You have shown a picture of what is possibly the most misunderstood yet brilliant leader the Conservatives have ever had. A politician who could verbally 'wipe the floor' with President Bliar (sic) showing both coruscation and a devastating grasp of the facts. As the current incumbents appear to be heading for another victory, and as the country seems to be sleepwalking to being a police state*, I take comfort in the fact that he is still young enough to be persuaded to try again.

You forgot to say that he's got a great head for ski-jumping. That's when he's not wearing his silly baseball cap of course.

Yes that baseball hat was a sartorial mistake, in the same way that I suspect my previous post to be a diplomatic one.

I can't find it anywhere, but it sounds like a useful word to describe a politician! :(
